I had been reluctant to drive my Civic Type R ,since purchase, because I felt like city driving would not do the car justice (especially living in LA). So a few friends and I scheduled to participate at XtremeSpeed’s Big Willow event. This is my 3rd time at a track, once at Streets of Willow, and another at AutoClub Speed Way, but my 1st time with the R. I can describe my experience in 1 word....scary...but in a good way.
The car did everything I wanted it to and more. It kept pushing me to go beyond my limits as a driver, and give the R a challenge. Every lap I gained a little more confidence, in myself, and learned more and more about the car’s capabilities . I would never have confidence to dive into turn 1 at 85-90mph in any other Honda that I’ve owned, but this car did it with ease. Coming out of turn 7 into turn 8, the car effortlessly took that turn at 125mph. My buddy who drove a Q60 Red Sport described the car as planted and on rails. My fastest lap was 1:46. I know the car had much more to give, but I wasn’t confident enough to push her even further. More seat time will be needed on my end.
To my surprise, there was another R on the track. I was fortunate enough to meet the amazing driver. @CVCCR drove his Crystal Black Pearl R down the track and it was hypnotizing. The quietest car there was putting down the fastest times on the track. That day he hit a PB of 1:33 with a few suspension mods and different wheels/tires. He was willing to share his experiences with me and things to look forward to with the R. Real cool guy .
Overall, I can’t wait to go to the track again. From one CTR owner to another, I encourage Everyone to at least take the car out to a track once and enjoy what the R can do in its natural habitat.
