I am looking to get new tires and this is what I have now. 215/40/18.

I don’t want a huge tire tho is that my best option?

They are 18x8.5

You have 215/50-18's on 8.5" wide rims?

Your current set is a little stretched but the thick sidewalls are helping a little bit:

Default tire width for 8.5" rim is 245mm and you can also go -1 at 235mm. So 245/40/18 and 235/40/18 sizes will both work. Shouldn't be any rub on 8.5" rims and stock heights. Your offset is +35? May want to go 235/40 if lowered.

Play with the following to stay within +/- 2% from OE tire diameter/circumference.

As you're looking to replace the current tires. So only focus on what's the best fitment for the 18x8.5 rims, hence go with 235/40 or 245/40.

I’m a complete noob with tires lol. So would that be a bigger side wall than what I have now?

The OEM tire size on the Civic 8.5X18" wheels (Sport and Si Coupe and Sedan, Sport / Sport Touring Hatchback) is 235/40-18.

The OEM rim width is 8", not 8.5". A 215 tire should not be put on a 8.5" wide rim. Minimum should be 225 but optimal is 235 or 245. You can use the OEM tire size of 235/40-18 on a 18x8.5" rim.
