Hey guys,

I just ordered my CF hood, it should be here in a few days. I'm also getting ready to get a CF wing center piece as soon as I land on which one I want.

But before installing, I wanted to see what you guys were doing to protect your CF pieces.

Back in my CRX days I just had an additional layer of clear coat added. But I wasn't sure if there were better options, it's been a decade... lol.

Anyway, thanks in advance.

I had my stock hood (& entire front end) covered in paint protection film & then OptiCoat ceramic. It is really brilliant. If I’d known it was so good, I would have done the rest of the car the same. I’d take it to get the film & ceramic before you install. It’s not cheap, but very worth it my opinion. Crazy easy to clean & flawless (zero scratches or chips) after 9 months & 5,500 miles. Granted I rarely ever drive on the highway, but still.

To perhaps confirm-
I barely drive my car on the highway, just turned 5700 miles. At about 4900, I counted 9 stone chips just on the hood. I went for ceramic coating but didn't do any film.
So, I got some touch-up paint and took it in for a layer of film and ceramic coat on top of the film. It doesn't look perfect but it's because of the touchups. I think the car is safe now - at least the hood is.

Rocks are bad for sure, but your real enemy is going to be UV damage. Aside from applying a UV blocking clear coat over the gel-coat on the hood, there isn't much you can do besides keep it out of the sun.

What is the point with ceramic coat on top of a pu film?
A good pu film can heal with heat but you cancel this property by applying ceramic coat on top of it...
A scratch on ceramic coat can't be polished away.

I think it's just the topcoat, so you get the hydrophobic effect.

Well....for this I would choose a good wax or sealant (cheaper and more forgiving)
I'll have to ask next time I visit. I know it got HydroSilex on it but I don't know for sure if that was over top of something else, or right on the plastic film.

The ceramic over film is just great. No more waxing for me. Nothing sticks to it and it is so easy to clean. I don’t even use towells when I dry, only the Master Blaster (no touch drying + ceramic over film = no micro scratches). It actually enhances the paint & the hood is the best looking section on my car.
