The parts page calls the battery negative terminal a sensor assy. There is a gnd wire AND a connector with two small wires on it. what do those wires do, where do they go ? What would happen if I just disconnected it ?

Every single 10th gen civic has the same negative batt terminal. I assume if you are in here, you have a 10th gen civic.

You're not hurting anything by having grounds... if you're asking about removing it I'll assume you have it. Why would you want to remove it?

What if I want to use something bigger than the wimpy gnd cable it comes with ? Or ... gasp ... use after market battery terminals ?

Short answer: I don't know the facts re: the secondary ground.

But given the shitshow of issues that can be caused by a bad battery, grounding, or even just a change in the resistance of all of the above; I'd personally stick with OEM. Although I can't think of a reason that a larger conductor would be a problem.

Edit: I will, however, warn you to not turn the screw too far when loosening the tension on the connector. Previous owners have done so and lost the locking nut in the bowels of the engine bay.

This is the battery sensor. Don't touch it.

It's sensing the current of course. The total current going to or out of the battery. The two wires send a tiny voltage drop on a very small resistance that's inside that clamp.
If you disconnect these wires the ECU will let you know and your charging system will not work.
