GrassRootsMotorsports recently did a comparison test between the RE-71R, the Goodyear Supersport3 and new Michelin Sport Cup 2 Connect on a very powerful McLaren. This was a track test and not autocross. Interestingly not only did they find the Goodyear and Michelin faster than the RE-71R but the Goodyear has a 220 UTQG rating and the Michelin has a 240 rating. Unfortunately the newer tires also provided their best laps on the first lap and lost speed on subsequent laps. To me this says, they may compete with or beat the RE-71R and possibly the Yoko A052 for fastest lap but are likely not suitable lapping tires.

I have competed in time attack series in the past where the tire is fastest on the first lap and then deteriorates fairly quickly which is the antithesis of my driving style where I need a few laps to get going fast. Certainly the requirements of a good lapping tire are different than these 1 hot lap wonders. Even Hoosier R7s are more consistent.

fwiw I run PS4S 245/40/18 on my SI. Have been to the track twice with them and they performed well (miles better than the OEM tires), but wont have the same grip as something with a 200 TW. Theyre great if you're looking for a great all-around summer tire with a few trackdays here and there

I did 2 days back to back at Watkins Glen with PS4S's. It was ~90F ambient those days, but I'm a novice so I wasn't exactly going at the car's limit. I had the pressures high, around 30-32 cold which meant like 40+ hot. By the end of the second day I'd say the tires still had >50% life left.

So while they certainly aren't meant for track use, they can do a serviceable job. If you're like me and only do a couple track days a year and don't want to have a separate street and track set, I think the PS4S's are a pretty good compromise.

Also, FWIW, I think the PS4S's are MILES better than the stock contis it came with. They have better life expectancy, more grip, and a smoother+quieter ride than the contis did. So glad I switched to them after the stock ones wore out in ~10k miles

Thinking of trying the new Eagle F1 Supercar 3R. Heard they are not good in the rain much like the Cup 2 but I don't plan on doing much driving in the rain anyway

The 3R will be very quick and likely handle heat well but longevity will not be its strong suit.

I’m running PS4’s 235/40/18’s for everyday drive on my CTR. What pressure do you guys recommend?

Interesting choice with going thinner than OEM with the tires. I'd still recommend following the OE tire pressure, 35/33 F/R.

I've done several track days on p4s, some on 245/35r20 and some on 265/35r18. I love the p4s as street tires, but 2 to 3 hard laps and you'll no doubt notice the grip erode.

Next season I'm going for the 20s as my around town wheels and swapping the used track day p4s on the 18s out for something more aggressive
