So from this post it looks like most people when they tinted their car did not consider the 70% factory tint, which makes a lot of car illegal. if i tint my car 50% that would make it around 35% which is the legal limit of most states. 70% x 0.5 = 35%.
I had my window tested and it came out to 74% (window states Min 70%). So the 50% actually makes it 36-38%.

You should take your car to the tint shop and have them put a meter on your window then slip different tint films in between to get the actual % and you can choose. I am just stuck on which brand now and whether dyed, hybrid or ceramic tint.

I found out today that our cars are not actually 70% tinted from the factory. The DOT 70% Min label just states that it is in compliant with DOT regulations for light transparency and the actual is different. Tested all Windows except for windshield. Weird that the rear Windows have higher VLT than the front.

Front Window= 74-75% VLT
Rear Windows= 77-78% VLT

The results are consistent with all windows.

Has anyone installed 3M Crystalline tint? How much did you pay? Anyone in the Bay Area use it? Thank you all.

Mine metered at 77% on the factory tint, legal in WV is 35% so went with 45% to get as close to that limit as possible.

That's probably what I'm going to do. It's 50/35 in my state but I want to go 35/35 so I'll do 45 on top of the 70.

Anyone here tint their sunroof. What % did you use? I have Llumar CTX 35 front, 15 back and Air 80 windshield. Thinking Suntek CXP 18 for the sunroof. I like having the moonroof cover open but want the heat rejection. Big difference between my tinted windshield and the sunroof. Thanks.

Researched my area within an hour's drive and found this reputable shop called Tint Pros. They tint most of the dealers' new vehicles in the area and beyond. Drove an hour one way, and now I'm sitting in the shop's waiting room with the car getting tinted in the back. Asked the shop's owner what brand of ceramic tint they carry, and he said they use Solar Gard. I decided to go with the ceramic at 20% but chose only to have back half of the car done (for now). I was quoted $220. California doesn't really allow the front windows tinted, but many seem to get away with it. Shop owner said that most of his customers who went with 50% on the front windows have never really had any problems getting stopped by the cops. According to him, they've done thousands of auto tints and only about 1% have come back as being stopped by a cop. Usually the customer is stopped for other violations, and the front window tints was recognized as being noncompliant. He said it's a grey area. Just saw a car come out of the shop with 50% in the front, and I think it's definitely questionable. Don't want to deal with cops any time soon. Will post pics soon.
