Any body have any good recommendations for shift knobs that fit the 21 without having to change the collar? If you do have to change the collar how hard is that process?

Most collar swaps may require the removal of the shift boot which is relatively easy to be honest. Maybe half an hour to do and super simple. Note that Honda does not sell a collar by itself; it’s part of the shift boot assembly.

That said, any shift knob that is cut flush with the drill will work with the 2020+ Type R. Shift knobs that are counterbored or countersunk may not work with the 2020 shift collar. However, using the 2017-19 retaining nut can allow these to work. The old nut should still work with the new collar, but the shift boot will sag ⅛ of an inch. However, the opposite cannot be said (old boot with new nut).

I've been trying to find a shift knob that doesn't burn my hand in the summer. Here's the top list I have:
  • Stock 2020+ wrapped in leather and Alcantera: smooth with a hint of mechanical feel
  • United Speed Racing weighted: very close to stock 2017-19 feeling. Slightly less smooth than 2020 but offers a bit more mechanical feedback and notchiness.
  • 2017-19 stock shift knob (burns hand, used as reference point): similar to the United Speed Racing weighted.
  • Mugen leather: Smoother than the 17-19 stock, but adds a bit of notchiness.
  • United Speed Racing unweighted (use link for weighted): very notchy feeling shift knob.
  • Spoon Sports delrin: Gives a very mechanical/notchy feel to the shifts. You'll feel just about everything you possibly can from the cable actuated stock shifter.
  • Raceseng Sphereology: Very smooth, sits high. Will not fit stock 2020+ setup.
  • Raceseng Topology: Very smooth, sits high. Will not fit stock 2020+ setup.
  • Honda accessory red leather: Mixed bag. With the stock 2017-19 setup, it's a very smooth shifter. With the 2020+ shift boot/nut and 2017-19 shifter is very notchy and mechanical feeling, similar to Spoon, but a bit smoother.
These are the only ones that come to mind. I've used/tested others as well that aren't listed. In general, I feel like a lighter knob gives more mechanical feel than a heavier one while a heavier shift knob is smoother overall. A higher sitting shift knob will provide a smoother feel while a lower sitting one will give more of a mechanical feedback. You can use both of these to kind of set the way you want your shift to feel.

Do note that I'm still using a stock 2017-19 shifter but have the 2020 shift boot/collar and retaining nut so I kind of have a shifter height between the old and new refreshes. If you use an aftermarket shifter you'd need to change the shift collar anyways, but that would influence the shift knob you'd want. If you go over to an aftermarket shifter, it will already give more of a mechanical feel and in such cases, a heavier knob may be more beneficial over that on a stock shifter.

I ran this on my Si and will be moving it over to my R for the winter probably. For summer, I was able to get away with ceramic window tint, windshield cover and a shift knob sock for the first bit of the drive.

This knob is great because it’s built out of Delrin, so it doesn’t change drastically to temperatures.

I really like the look of your OE knob there. Very classy design.

I contacted acuity to inquire, and they said it should be out by the end of the year. They are in the process of finishing up testing at the moment.
