Just got a 2018 R and was wondering three things about the infotainment system:

1) Can I run an nice simple old iPod shuffle through a USB input somehow?

2) Any tips on learning to live with the stock one?

3) Assuming I use sat-nav on my phone is there simply an aftermarket replacement for it that works and has volume control? Maybe a nice Crutchfield sort of thing?

Thanks

  1. I thought it supported iPod playback by default. I could be wrong though.
  2. Drive the car in Comfort mode for day to day driving. Put it into sport of +R when you want to have a little fun. It will change the dynamics of the car and give it a different personality. This obviously only applies if you're daily driving it.
  3. Aftermarket replacement what? It has CarPlay and Android Auto which come with volume control baked it.

If you want minimalist, you could just use a USB drive.
My old Shuffle charged on a doc, and don't think you could use it while it was charging. So not sure how you could plug it up to your car.

1) Like mentioned above, using a usb drive with mp3 files is the simplest option, but I feel like the ipod shuffle should be viable as well? Assuming it runs in some type of usb mode if plugged in like most mobile devices do.

2) I actually don't think the stock one is that bad, but I almost exclusively use Android Auto.

3) I personally wouldn't swap out the entire head-unit because there are a few vehicle settings that are tied to it like rev match, oil life, etc.

Thanks for the feedback.
Yeah, I had read some things about the lack of volume knob blah, blah, blah...
USB port and an old iPod fired right up and sounds fine.
Interface even works for pause and skip!
Volume slide on steering wheel...
Spent all of 20 minutes paying with it so far and seems like all will be just fine.
I did check with Crutchfield and they said they have nothing so far and didn't sound like anything in the planning stages.
