Wow 98? We have 91 and 94. I haven't looked at the manual but in Canada 91 is considered premium.
In the US/canada manual I saw that for Civics that are labeled with premium recommended, minimum is 91 and if you put fuel grade below it you may experience occasional engine knocking. I'm not sure if 91 would be the grade that raises the power by 6hp.

The 8th gen Civic hatch in the UK once required 95 only lol they're fussy.

It's been posted before but US 87 is about AU 91 - it's the RON MON rating system - just think Reg - Mid - Prem Octane is about the same for the 3 grades.

Oh thanks for that. I did a search and realised that US uses AKI system to measure octane ratings. 91 AKI is equal to 95 RON, which is the premium in Australia.

UK still classifies 95 RON as normal because they have 97 as premium. But in reality 95 is already good.

I put premium into my EX-t for the first time today, and I swear it feels faster after 25km.

same thing with our HRV, 1 to 2 high mpg and feel more powerful with 91.

I just filled mine for the first time with 91!

BTW how's your gas milege...
I only filled once and I did it early as I didn't want to miss the relatively low gas prices. I would have been close to 600k to the tank.

Currently getting about 6.1l/100km. About 650km a tank on premium. Not bad considering my 06 Acura csx was giving me about 700km a tank

I've been strictly in the city and I've gotten 9.8L/100km on my last tank and after filling up I'm around 9.7L/100km in my current tank... I'm nowhere close to the posted fuel economy, which I was able to in my 2013 manual accord...

My pre-break in fuel economy was miserable. I think it was somewhere closer to your numbers per tank. Remember since you're in Vancouver and depending on the route you take it will take you through countless hills and stop lights. Posted fuel economies are always extremely optimistic. For example, when I was commuting on Kingsway during rush hour, I was getting ~10 L/100km. Now when I commute off rush hour (and switching to a less busy street), I'm getting around 8.4L/100km.

I'm not sure about the others, but my sole concern is if there are any long term adverse effect with the use of regular octane versus the recommended premium as the horsepower difference discussed is quite negligible.

I'm going to use premium cause the car comes alive with 93. I find myself not driving it as hard on 87 cause it doesn't feel quite as responsive or lively.

I think thats how they generate the extra 6hp, with a fuel map tune and using 91. Tbh, I would just stick with 91 when the manual said so. It is only $1 or 2 more per fuel up. I understand it is about $100 to $200 more per year, but if you are worrying about that. You might wanna stick with the 87 1.5T cars.
Maybe $1 or 2 were you live.. In connecticut its .50 more for 91 and about .65 more for 93... Why.. I have no clue... Its been that way for about 6 years.. Not like the .10 it used to be forneach grade up

I wish it was $1 or $2 per fill up difference in Maryland. Here, it cost 50 cents or more for premium. That's over $6 every fill up and that adds up. I just don't think it's worth the small power gain you get, at least for me. I drive my car 90% for commuting in stop and go.

I'm looking for a commuter so if it won't permanently reduce engine life then I'll opt for regular octane. Originally looked into the touring sedan but the hatchback dual exhaust looks too sexy.
