We just spied the upcoming 2016 Honda Civic sedan which gives us the most detailed look yet of the return of the sports car heritage for the vehicle.

Our photographers had more than five uninterrupted minutes examining two 10th generation Civic prototypes top-to-bottom -- which provided us with many details that have yet to be seen until now.

Interior:

Visible are the next-gen Civic's center stack, full front seating area and the back seats. The layout of the dashboard, multi-function steering wheel and door trim can also be made out. So what do we see?

Clear evidence of higher end materials including more attractive leather with a carbon fiber looking strip sewn into the seats for a classy touch.

One of the prototypes also reveals buttons for heated rear seats which also shows that the rear seat room appears to be very generous.

The new Civic's gauge cluster is now covered by a single, sculpted hood and flanked angular hood vents that lead into a new, simple center stack arrangement. The fussiness of the current Civic's dual-level array of instrumentation is dropped in favor of a cleaner and sportier layout for the next-generation interior. The center stack leads down to a cavernous storage binnacle, to the nicely placed shift lever, and on to another another storage spot. A long, fabric-covered arm rest appears to have room for additional storage below, making for what appears to be a space-efficient layout.

Under-Car:

A look under the latest Civic prototypes reveals the layout for both the single and dual exhaust systems as well as glimpses of the suspension layout.

The two latest prototypes were different trim levels, with a higher-spec model and something more basic. These two cars gave us a look at two different wheel/tire configurations -- 215/50R17s on Firestone FT140 tires, and 215/55R16s on Hankook Kinergy GT rubber.

Exterior:

The new Civic prototypes reveal new, full LED headlights consistent with the 2016 Honda Accord Touring models that Honda just revealed. These new LED headlights gives us the closest thing to what we saw on the Honda Civic Coupe Concept back in April. The same prototype that showcased the LED headlights was also equipped with full leather and heated rear seats, so this is clearly Honda's upper-crust trim.

A close look at the passenger-side wing mirror reveals a small camera cleverly integrated into the outer housing, for optimum blind-spot protection. The blind spot camera appears to be activated by the stalk on the left of the steering wheel. A button resides on the tip of the stalk, so the driver can activate the camera when preparing to change lanes.

I hope ventilated front seats are an option on the higher trims. They make a world of a difference on long road trips.

Also the volume control on the steering wheel looks like a track pad...? Anyone else notice this?

And they moved the Bluetooth calling buttons, which is a shame because they are perfect in the 9th gen.

Thanks admin. You guys are always posting good material. The sedan looks like it'll be much more unique and stylish than the current one. Still too big and too many doors for what I need but it's good to see the designers didn't just give the coupe all the styling attention.

Nice photos! Unfortunately it doesn't have the two level panel, but anyway in general I like the new design!

Seeing all the different wheels and tires, I'm guessing LX will get 16's, EX and EX-L will get 17's, SI will get 18's, and Type R will get 19's. The halogen projectors may be for the LX while the LED headlights are for EX and above. The seats look like they're leather, but they're probably some sort of microfiber.

Looks kinda big from some angles. It's lost that "Civicness" that made it appealing to generations of fanboys. Obviously I'm one of them. This car is still at the top of my shopping list, but I think the coupe will be more appealing.

I could be wrong but didn't they already say that the 10th gen Civic is going to be smaller? Maybe the photographer used some wide angle lenses for closer shots of the car while moving? that tends to stretch it out in pictures.

They said it would be lighter, not smaller. The new civic rides on a 3 inch long wheelbase, so length wise there will be some growth, i think most of the assumed length is just because of the new shape of the car compared to the current. Spy shots of the new car parked next to an 8th gen showed that length increase was minimal. The car is supposed to be lower than the current car, either through a lower suspension or lower roofline. There is some substantial growth in width, almost to accord size width it looks which is also because of the new platform it'll share with the next accord. That width will help handling stability in corners though.

The coupe has always been more appealing to me too.

I don't mind increase in size if it doesn't gain in weight, and even better if it's lighter. Weight is what kills performance not so much size. Were there estimates of how much lighter it'll be?

And it'll add some side to side interior space which is welcome.

Heated rear seats is a real surprise.

I just hope that all the fancy new options doesn't negate what was supposed to be a lighter car/platform.

No idea how much lighter, i wouldn't imagine the weight savings with the increased size and tech to be more than 50-100 pounds max and on upper trims that are fully loaded the weight savings might be negated a bit. Pegging on both engines having "class leading performance" like honda has stated. I figure if they are a bit lighter they only need to make about 155-160 or so horses to match their competition in terms of 0-60 times. As per honda i imagine the handling will be where it really shines. Looking forward to even the base coupe being a real canyon carver with that low wide stance. Hopefully they put some slightly stickier tires on the coupe (as opposed to the crap tires the current ones have that slip and slide all over the place) to help that out too. Of course, if honda wises up and offers an auto on the Si i'll definitely go for one of those instead of an EX coupe. Can't wait till the engine specs are released.
