Why so cramped anyway? Car should be a bit longer but engine compartment looks more stuffed than current gen.

Notice how you can see the whole engine though. The current gen gets partially tucked under the plastic at the base of the windshield. Also, these are not looking straight down, but from an angle that can make it look more cramped than it is.

Good point. The current engine is stuffed up under the windshield some, and if you look in the current car, most of the free space is between the front bumper/grill and the engine... since you aren't looking straight down you can't see the space behind the front grill which is where most of the underhood space probably is on this car as well.

Makes sense. Hope this doesn't mean the engine is actually sitting much more forward than current sedan, compared to the rest of the car's length. Will be interesting to see if and how much it effects front/rear weight ratio.

Even if the engine's sitting a little more forward than before keep in mind the wheelbase is now also longer by more than an inch so that should help keep the engine's position relative to the front axle.

It's also worth noting that with the new platform they were able to drop the engine lower, lowering the center of gravity for the car as well.

Here's a comparison between the 2015 1.8L and the 2016 2.0L. Here you can see how much closer the engine is to the strut towers - a good move for weight distribution and balance. Likewise regarding the placement of the battery, for that matter.

Great side by side look thx. And like Robb said the engine is lower as well. Nice little strut tower on the 2016. I don't see one on the 2015 - is it just behind and not visible in the pic?

The strut towers are under the black plastic cowl in each corner.
