'19 Sport 6-manual, best choice to upgrade trans on a budget?

Best option to upgrade the transmission on my 2019 Sport

  • OEM SI shifter, keep Boomba Racing short throw adapter in place under the hood.

  • OEM Type R shifter, 2016-19

  • OEM Type R shifter, 2020

Hi guys,

GREAT forum! Been lurking - every time I google anything about my Civic, the top hits are always here!

Bought a Civic Sport 6-manual new as soon as they hit the dealers lots in December of 2018, fun and economical commuter. The long throws of the transmission bugged me a bit (my other DD is a 2013 Mazda MX-5, and the 6-speed transmission on that is amazing), so a couple of months ago I bought the Boomba Racing short throw adapter that bolts in under the hood. Throws are shorter, but honestly the feel is more rubbery when shifting, so when looking into the Acuity Base Bushings to make that more solid, and doing more reading, I found that if I was going to do all that disassembly, may as well replace the entire shifter with either an SI, or a Type R, either 2016-19, or 2020 with shorter throws.

If I get an SI shifter, could keep the Boomba adapter, but honestly since it makes the shifts rubbery, thinking the smart money is to get a Type R OEM shifter, with the Acuity base bushings.

And as long as I have to remove my battery again and get under the hood to remove the Boomba adapter, may as well replace the shifter cable bushings with the ones from Acuity?

Final question - with the Type R shifter, would it be worthwhile to place an Acuity Centering Spring - or is that overkill or will it make the shifter feel less buttery? (I have driven a Type R that was on the lot at a CarMax - and the shift feel was amazing).

Would love the thought of the forum, thanks!

Gonna post a poll with those 3 choices, as those seem to be the best options from where I am.

I did the 2020 full shifter assembly. Didn’t touch anything else but add the 2020 shifter on top of it.
This is on my 2017 Civic Sport. The difference was substantial, shorter throws, tighter shift gate, and knob sits a lot lower.
I paid 48 bucks for the shifter assembly and it was a direct swap.

I’ve driven a TypeR with a hybrid racing shifter, and the 2020 shifter is very comparable.

I think you just need the acuity shifter cable bushings to give you a snappier engagement. Base bushings may help too. Should let you still retain the OEM shifter feel, but make your shifts feel more mechanical instead of cushioned.

If you want every shift feeling like you’re loading a .50 cal sniper, ypu’ll need the full shifter assembly

That looks awesome UnicornX -

have you driven a Type R 2016-19 ?

Wondering how much different the 2020 shifter is? Is it shorter (in height) AND has shorter throws?

Almost wondering if it might be too racy/close ratio for my wife lol, and if I should go with the 2016-19 version.

Yes I’ve driven a 2017-2019 Type R. I can say that the throws are a bit shorter. The height of the shift rod is also lower.
my wife drove it already and she said she felt the difference and it seemed “nice”.
Who knows if she was just giving me the benefit of the doubt and couldn’t really tell.

I have the Acuity Short Shifter i didnt have the money up front but i saved up for and and tbh well worth the money. The shifter is so solid and there is so much adjustability i always have such a great time driving because it feels so satisfying changing gears

One of the threads with the 2020 shifter (Type R Part Number thread maybe?) Had direct comparisons of the 2 CTR shifters next to each other. 2020 is shorter height and throw, and basically the same price.

Get the 2020 and you won't regret it. If you're on a budget, can add acuity bits later on, the console isn't that hard to take apart again later. I just did the 2020 CTR with acuity mounts, centering, and rocker. It's awesome.

Edit: Stumbled across the thread.

Thanks BoostinIX -

I'm leaning towards pulling the trigger on a 2020 CTR OEM shift assembly, paired with the Acuity base, and shifter bushings (I have to get back under the hood to remove my Boomba Racing short shift adapter anyways, so not really any more labor).

Thanks to those who chimed in.

Decided to go with the 2020 TypeR OEM shifter.

Today I took off the Boomba Racing Short Shift Adapter, and installed the Acuity Shift Cable Bushings.

Everything is stock other than I have a weighted shift knob. Shifts are back to stock being longer than with the BR adapter, and feel more precise - thinking from the Acuity bushings, if not just the power of suggestion, lol.

Pics of the Acuity bushings installed, and the OEM bushings and BR adapter that I removed.

Good choice, I did the acuity mods on my stock shifter and having known this was a cheap option it would've been my go to. I like the feel of the acuity parts, but not a fan of the ratchety shift feel. IMO the CTR shifter feels better(tried a '17 CTR), you won't regret it.
