1.5L Turbo Engine Oil Question

Hi All -

I drive a 2019 Hatchback Sport, 1.5L, and the manufacturer "recommended" oil is 0W 20. I live in an area that the coldest temperature my car might see is 57F, and only maybe every few years. Average temperature is in the mid/upper 70's. Given that, shouldn't I be running something like other than zero weight oil (since the zero is the viscosity rating at low temperatures)? I don't want premature wear and tear in my valve train, nor anywhere else.

What are the folks in SW US running? Right now you guy are baking!

I trust that if their engineers recommend 0W-20, then 0W-20 would do just fine. I've had 0 oil-related issues over the past 20k miles here in the constant 90+ degree weather. I haven't found anything on this site nor others where the oil weight was the culprit.

I've had friends with 2016/17 models using 0W-20 since they got it new as well, also no issues. There may be no need to overthink oil weight here.

A few people have mentioned that 0w-20 is mainly for fuel efficiency. I know multiple people have also said it’s too thin, I agree. Quite a few people run thicker oil if they are tuned even if it’s just a flash tune because of the heat it creates. My mechanic recommends 5W-20 since we don’t get super cold weather here in SoCal. I run it on my stock car. The engine is slightly quieter now and imo feels better but that may be a placebo.

0w20 oils are not too thin. Countless vehicles using 0w20 are running healthy, long lives into hundred of thousands of miles and oil analysis after oil analysis prove the engines are in tip top shape.

The 0w20 or 0w16 oils are too thin crap is just that. Crap.

I switched to 0w-30 after 40k miles. Performance is still the same. Just don’t go up to 40 IMHO.

I've run UOAs on Amsoil signature series 0w20, 0w30 and 5w30 in my 1.5t hatch (which I no longer own) and my FK8 (2.0t). Wear metals were very similar between the weights; the 1.5t seemed to like the 0w30, and the 2.0t liked the 5w30. You won't "hurt" these engines by running slightly heavier grades oil in them, and with fuel dilution and long change intervals, it may actually help. I wouldn't run Xw40 in them though.

0W-20 no matter what unless you're running dual fuel and/or a bigger turbo.
