Just an idea - on my last car (Accord) I used a motorcycle exhaust baffle to reduce the noise.

If you get there, and they do not fit, try removing the lower section of the back seat. It comes out easily and it might be just enough for the wheels to fit. Once you get the wheels in, the part you removed will fit somewhere in the car.
