Thank goodness this occurred where someone with a clue was there to help.
Before this has a chance to happen - don't try to use the wrong key on the tumbler either! I made this mistake on my FK7 and the tumbler ate the key, wouldn't release it. Newfangled Honda anti-theft lmao...

Heheh thank you 17RGuy. Your comment brought to mind an old western favorite. ?

Have had my fair share of the good (mostly), the bad (a couple) and the ugly (a few) during this build. Am lucky ? to have a very cool nephew that works on Hondas for a living. He’s bailed me out of several self imposed jams that could have been catastrophic.

Don't want to keep these lessons learned (the hard way) to myself, for someone to repeat without the benefit of an ultimate backup... ?

Always glad to hear my sense of humor comes through on these posts. ?

@fatherpain I love how candid you are. Good, bad, and the funny come out in your thread which I appreciate the hell out of.

@Fk7Peyton, I’m humbled and thank you for taking time to read through all these posts, especially in a single sitting. Glad it was able to be done on the clock.?.

Had intended for this build to slow in year 2, but the FK8 is such a great platform (imho) and so much fun to work on and drive, my impulses won out and ended up going the other way....

Fixed your comment btw ?

Had a strange and sad experience Friday 3/19.

Opened my eyes at 0549 in the morning ... Realizing I had forgotten to set the alarm and was late for work. :banghead: My shift starts at 0600 and I normally head out the door around 0535.

It was odd I had overslept. This is the only time I recall doing so in (20) years...My schedule is fixed 6 days a week so I always wake up around 0430, like clockwork, regardless whether an alarm goes off or not. Even on days off. Can never sleep in... My sleep habits are that of a Christmas elf or a ghoul. ?‍♂

Ran around the house looking for my shoes and sweatshirt and stumbled out the door @0556 No brushing of teeth, no shower and worst of all, no time for a morning dump. ?

Has anyone ever been late for work? It’s the pits and I couldn’t believe it. Called my boss, apologized and let him know I was gonna be (15) minutes late. It was the perfect opportunity for him to rip me a new one, (which he seems to relish), but he didn’t... Another oddity.

Was booking down the 91 freeway westbound approaching the 605 south in the good old 96 Honda Accord....:drive:when noticed brake lights ahead, signaling a possible accident... Traffic has been clear ever since the start of Covid. Of all the days. ?

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 7E6A2A84-211A-4CA8-A4D2-D8DEE72D2874

Quickly moved over from the fast lane and exited on Carmenita Rd, just in the nick of time... Something seriously bad had occurred. Took this route to get around it.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R A4E843C8-65BE-433C-8F8F-FF0092E27619

Something had brought the freeway to a grinding halt. Not a looky loo...but took photos in case I was hassled for not being there at 0615 like I said I'd be. This would take added time to get around.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R EAED47BB-E91C-432F-9A54-FA3036B856DA

Followed a fire truck, lights and sirens blaring onto the on ramp at Pioneer Blvd. Whatever was happening it was right there. Must have been 15-20 police, fire and paramedics on the freeway. The fire truck busted a U turn and headed towards the accident. I kept on going.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 15FD57A3-FE97-456C-82EA-7F8F73003274

And off to work I went, arriving @0624. Felt lucky because if I had gotten caught in that mess, I'd have been hours late, instead of minutes... Still was totally craptastic as my crew was waiting for me to get them started. ? Was a bit out of sorts as you may imagine....but eventually got settled into the work flow. As the day progressed, noticed the traffic never let up and stayed like that until the afternoon. What the hell happened? :dunno:

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 5F40ABE7-27DF-4E10-BB5D-7A26C800D9C7
Curious, googled to see if there was any news and sadly came across this tragic report.. ?

And that's when it struck... Had I woken up, on time, like always... There would have been a chance to have been involved in this horrific accident. Pass through that precise westbound section of freeway every day, in the fast lane at that exact time. ?

Not sure why I overslept that Friday, of all days.. But glad I did. That is something that would have been a nightmare to live with for the rest of my life, if involved.

For any that ride motorcycles (I do not), please be careful out there. ?

My sincere condolences to the family of Alfred Balestra, age 62, motorcyclist killed, by an a-hole reckless driver, cutting into his lane. ?

My good buddies @Volksparts and @boosted180sx cruised by the house to talk current and future projects and enjoy a beautiful SoCal Sunday. Was super cool seeing everyone's build progress since their last visit this past Summer. :bonk:

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R AC6D0AA4-C8F2-4B35-88C1-500A5D18BB49

Check out @boosted180sx's full Varis kit... Immaculate fitment. No gaps. Have seen this kit on a couple other cars at flash meets during the evening... But the first time seeing it in daylight. Breathtaking is the proper description. The carbon fiber all around looks absolutely amazing in person.

That's Volksparts checking out Ryota's bomb interior door panel upgrades.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R C9657F9A-9838-470E-9AF8-54A0C1F1E1DF

Boosted's car looks so good. Rocking Bronze OG TE37's with the perfect stance. Notice the sidemarker delete and Varis side skirts. So envious... Gonna up my J's Racing aero game to try to keep up, but I think it's Varis FTW

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R C226D460-858E-4B52-9D74-709F333321ED

And here's @Volksparts impressive SGP. APR front splitter. Aftermarked hood scoop. Morimoto headlights and Sequence exhaust.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 207BDA20-6D43-4F1B-B26D-A644C0DBFC44

Was wowed by the automatic folding CF mirrors and probably the last time I'll see Dave's car on these wheels. TE37s are on the way. :D

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R BAC07BC0-53A3-480E-A880-13FB6A05F6ED

A quick glimpse of @boosted180sx's clean and amazing interior, so much fantastic Suedit Alcantara.... Goals!

All and all was a really fun visit. Cooked and served lunch on the back patio and they both took turns driving our cars around the neighborhood, which was good because they noticed the throttle response on my car was "sudden", so that is something I'll ask my tuner to look into softening up.

Thank you Ryota and Dave for taking time to stop by and hang out. :headbang:

Went with the family on a spring break vacation to Felton, just north of Santa Cruz and were in awe of the redwoods there.

Ironically, I view several pending projects that have been on hold, similar to how my wife and offspring are looking at this redwood. So this is a therapeutic overdue year 2 state of the build task list if you will. ?

As mentioned previously, there are a variety of reasons, for the delays....Most of which, is a lack of time, however I'm determined to perform the work myself, rather than a shop. The other conundrum is whether its better to drive the car during favorable weather, or shut it down to mod..

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 13CDCAA0-F55E-4F88-954B-837000B88D52

Also need a solution for the bottom of our driveway so the car doesn't get scraped to hell when it’s finally lowered on coils and aftermarket front lip installed. ? This is the current clearance @stock height and the car is regularly driven down for mods, maintenance and washing ? Hopefully, an additional layer of concrete will do the trick, otherwise custom ramps may be needed.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R A0D8994B-0203-43FD-A92F-F8F496108E92

In addition to being lowered, it’s going to be especially bad with the newly released J's Racing aero. Especially the front lip, which extends much further than OEM. @boosted180sx tried warning me off to no avail. The OCD is strong...Hopefully, not heeding his advice doesn't become a colossal mistake on my part o_O

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R B9F7E13F-57FE-462F-8E9B-87CAE712BC72

Ordered the lip, vents, side wing, canards and grill mounting plate to reinstall the OEM Type R lettering.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R D637886C-8C51-4554-BD7C-B2844AA217B4

Another angle from underneath. Received this after submitting the non-refundable deposit. The lip appears to be fairly massive. Hopefully it doesn't ruin my driving experience around town. Going to be super wary of dips, driveways and hills after it’s on. Not sure this was the smartest move on my part. Currently daily drive everywhere, worry free at stock height... ETA is 3.5 months

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 36D73CF0-9BB7-48EB-A4ED-F55E2FF09C13
The irony is just finished paying off the Motec FK8 AU kit a couple weeks back... Then J's Racing drops this aero kit and it's super expensive, for what it is. Got that Michael Corleone feeling right about now...

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 3C4DE1EE-FCED-4685-B944-4311B796CC4E
Also have this baffled oil pan from Unit 2 Fabrication in the works to guard against oil starvation at the track. Figure this will be good insurance against a blown engine...

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 83AD2837-8CC1-496E-B16E-EC5BC6ABB566
In addition to the baffles, there are trap doors that allow oil flow one way but not the reverse, like a check valve. Requested they drill and tap an 1/8" NPT in the pan for a temperature sensor.

Despite wanting to get back to driving on the track, here is the list of things to get done first:
  • Reassemble the EZ Carlift.
  • Get a new set of A052 tires. These don't last long at all. ?
  • Bleed brakes and replace pads. Feel some vibration under hard stopping, so its time.
  • Install RV6 suspension gear
  • Install JRZ coilovers and HKS error cancellers.
  • Re-align the car.
  • Install Dream Automotive hard lagged water pipe and turbo heat shield (Not looking forward to this).
  • Replace Eventuri CF inlet tube with updated recall version. ETA 2 weeks
  • Install baffled oil pan.
  • Install J's Racing Aero (will likely hit the track one more time before this goes on).
  • Clean the interior - @boosted180sx and @Volksparts can attest this needs to be done, sigh.

Unless you are using your track tires for competition, I wouldn't suggest getting the Yokohama A052s. They are basically an autocross tire that is useful for a few good laps then falls off in performance. Particularly where you track with high ambient temps, it is not going to last long at all. A more robust tire like the Hankook RS4 is also streetable, not as fast but more consistent and wears much longer. I race in an endurance race series which requires 200 UTQG tires and RS4s are by far the most popular. Last race I was at, all of the top 5 finishers were on RS4s.

Thanks @evans609. Always humbled when someone mentions reading through in its entirety. The clickable table of contents in post #1 has been handy. I often refer back to random items and it would be a nightmare to remember which page.

Am following and enjoying your build progress. The photos are terrific and the locations are beautiful. SoCal doesn’t get snow other than the mountains, so seeing what it’s like up there in O Canada ?? is pretty amazing. :headbang:

For those interested, Brandon’s build can be found here

Just finished reading. Great thread dude, reminds me of my subaru build journal hah way I do things is quite similar. Keep it up dude

Dave B, thank you for the recommendation. My track buddy that drives a 2019 Corvette swears by the RS4s as well. Definitely will consider going that route next time I replace all (4). :)

For now will likely purchase (2) Bridgestone RE71Rs to match with (2) leftover RE71Rs with good tread sitting in the garage.

Alot of the SoCal CTR guys like the A052s, but they just wear so quickly, it’s a downer. ?

As promised, Eventuri sent an upgraded CF turbo inlet tube, as there was a reported mounting hardware failure on a high HP FK8 build. Will post a side by side comparison when the original is removed.

Will likely get off my lazy duff and start the Dream Automotive cooling mods, now that this part is in hand. No sense doing double work, if don’t need to... and the inlet tube is a pain to install when running a Radium CCV catch can. ?

Connected with Salasko Racing tonight and requested the throttle sensitivity be softened a little, in response to feedback from @boosted180sx and @Volksparts. They both drove the car and noted the accelerator seemed full on at the slightest amount of foot pressure.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 2A50650C-AC1D-46D8-8BF2-50B99E8D024A
Ben found the Motec throttle sensitivity was set ultra aggressive and softened it up. Will test the new settings to see if prefer it like this.

He also turned off Auto Rev Match, which was driving me nuts. Not a fan of the throttle blipping on its own when changing gears. Toggled it on to try it at the track, then couldn’t go back in the normal settings due to a Motec glitch.

That was the first thing I did was make the throttle positions the same for every mode, I didn't like the different sensitivities...pretty sure I copied sport to comfort and r

Took a week off to catch up on home projects... reassembled the EZ car lift, which had been out for (2) months... though the parts that were sent for service came back after just (1) week. Due to work and family, couldn't find the time needed to concentrate and put it back together...

Now that It's back together, ready for the next round of mods and maintenance, when that gets back underway. :D

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 6D17952A-8C9B-47FB-9B9E-FB471741691C

The garage had devolved into a depressing clusterf##K of car parts, tools, buckets and junk.... Pictures don't do justice to the full scope of the horrific mess that had accumulated... @boosted180sx and @Volksparts caught a glimpse a few weeks back, but were too polite to slap me and ask "dude, WTF?"

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 70EB537B-8A32-4334-8FBD-30C165A4EF1D

All kinds of nonsense squatting in there, including an OEM hood, various parts for other cars, an air compressor, etc... yet, despite the clutter, always knew where things were, when needed. Or at least had a vague idea ?.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 4689FD43-BC1D-4E5B-A891-966893DCCAF2

My pack ratty ways started negatively affecting my ability to mod, as time and energy was spent locating stuff buried or set aside . Being an overworked, slobby pig also forced me to set aside another OCD obsession I was into before my focus shifted to our son's sports activities, then later to modding the FK8 and track driving: Arcade game collecting

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R DF33BF06-0F9D-4B71-9D84-EB96A4E7C01E

Well the old saying goes, "the first step to recovery is admitting I have a problem." Well I do and decided to address it. Picked up this tool box from Home depot to have a spot for all my tools. ?

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R E5AA431C-5C51-4BCD-8B56-D2D1185EDE2C

This Husky toolbox seemed like a good choice for the home garage. The top lifts up for more storage and it has a drawer for power tools, which are nice features. The dimensions are 63" wide and 24" deep. Plenty of space for car tools and such. Being organized will make things much easier to work on the car in near future. ;)

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 0AFC91F6-546C-490F-A74A-6C3F10C70D69

Addressed the mess head on and moved stuff out of the garage to sort then cram into the storage room.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 09DC9E85-E362-41DD-AA7C-51782601BF78

What a mess... and that was just the tip of the iceberg. So much more junk remained inside.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R BBCDBDE1-C593-4EB6-8F13-74D9BF392E8F

Took a couple days, but was able to make everything fit in the storage room, including this Egret 2 arcade cab. This is one of the workhorses of my collection, because it can run pretty much any game PCB in it and can also play older games via adapters. Stashed all my old OEM FK8 parts on shelves.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 524821BB-A82E-4C63-B246-19E0F61F1239

Also had room to stash the ez car lift along with a 2nd arcade cab near the door...
