Experienced what might be called a “near miss” after the wheels were installed Saturday. It was rushed and done last minute because the hub rings didn’t arrive in the mail until 415pm and the shop closed @5pm.
Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R C3B80BB9-16C9-4617-BB69-FD977E703BA5

Dropped the wheels off the day before and tires were mounted and ready to go on. I got there with maybe 15 minutes left in the day.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 91F192F2-D0BC-4F7F-86DF-E3AA196B1CB0

The store manager and his crew were really cool and total car guys. I was surprised they were willing to put the tires on that late and worked a little over. The shop was careful handling the wheels and let me hang around and made sure I understood how the Iconix lugs went on :)

Drove the car a couple blocks and noticed a faint sound originating from the front wheel well when slightly turning. Almost dismissed it as a rock at first, but pulled over to inspect, when noticed the sound from both sides.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 499CABBC-690D-4F39-8D6E-521DDD7EA4AC

Spent several minutes peeling a big tire sticker from the rear tread (it was making noise also) then found indication of both front brake lines hitting the inside of the 18” rims and wearing through. They cleared with the wheels straight, but rubbed when turning.

It was well past 530pm and the shop was closed and lights off. Called and the manager was still there. He re-opened the shop, raised the car, inspected the lines for integrity, zip tied them to clear and I was back on my way ;)

***Important lesson learned when transitioning from OEM to a smaller wheel size... The aftermarket brake lines cleared the OEM 20” wheels no problem, however they rubbed the smaller 18’s to create a dangerous condition. Could have gone really bad if had not stopped to investigate the sound right away.

The damage to the lines was limited to the outer casing so the car is safe to drive, but ordered a new set to replace them anyways.

Let me preface to say I’m just coming off OEM continentals with maybe 40% tread left...

Really impressed with the Bridgestones so far.. The improvement has been substantial and now understand why wheels and tires are usually one of the first performance mods many opt for. Appreciate hpbyhermann providing the tire suggestion ;)

Experienced almost the same “wow” factor as when first driving the car, coming from the 95 accord.

SoCal weather has been perfect to test out the tires. Dry Saturday night and Sunday. Rain last night and today :)

Road noise increased a little, but not to the point it will bother me. Can hear more rocks picked up along with the sound of tire treads adhering to the road. Ride is softer due to increased tire thickness. Grip has significantly improved. No longer wheel hopping and wheel spin been cut way down when it’s dry. Tires still spin on wet roads. Getting an alignment today.

Looking forward to trying the car on a canyon or track.

Downside is tires will probably need to be replaced annually.

 Looking good! How does it drive now?

Thank you Frank, outside of the wheels and a couple minor bits, the car still looks stock at a quick glance.. so abit of a ho-hum sleeper compared to a lot of cars I see at local meets, haha.

The pressed double black are a little darker than I thought they’d be, but it hasn’t been sunny here so maybe they will brighten up when the rain goes away. Probably will look at options to lower the car an inch or so.. not yet sure if will do that with springs or coilovers. Was eyeing Mario_Kart’s HKS coilovers but saw they were recently snagged, so that option is off the table :(

Btw I’m watching your journal to get some tips on style hermano. Enjoying the progress ;)

Looking good!

Your car is looking absolutely angry now! What a great looking ride!! Those tires are incredible on these cars. I bet you will get 2 years plus of use out of them depending on how you drive!

I appreciate that. I didn’t think anyone was actually watching it.

Took the car for an alignment yesterday to the dealership. Knew it was overdue because I nailed a pothole and ran over one of those goofy Botts’ Dots awhile back. Didn’t realize the alignment was that far off though, heh.

Me: I’d appreciate it if your techs not test drive my car after the alignment.

Service Advisor: Don’t worry. Our guys see Type Rs all the time and some own Type Rs that are heavily modded, so no one is interested in joy riding your car...But I’ll put a note the customer does not want it driven, will pick up as is...

Me: Hey cool thanks man!

***Car had (2) miles more on the odometer when picked it up *doh* smh.

On the bright side, car really feels dialed in now that it’s properly aligned. Steering wheel is centered. Grip and handling feels perfect now. ;)

**ugh** Heard a couple knocks in the wheels on our way to visit friends and family Christmas Eve. Suspect the wheel weights are coming loose because I ceramic coated the inner barrels before having tires mounted. Another hard lesson learned :(

Sounded like a good idea at the time, but in hindsight the weights have a hard time adhering to the coating. Did a quick flashlight inspection and pretty sure some weights are missing.

Gonna have to take it back to the tire shop and ask to claybar or polish the areas where they reinstall the weights.

Took the car in for rebalancing today, at no charge. Confirmed several of the adhesive weights had fallen off. The tire shop lightly roughed the barrel surface with 1000 grit sandpaper, then reinstalled them.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R AB8252AF-A048-46B0-B5EB-B1C9BFA10D72

They also replaced a bolt that had fallen out from the brake line bracket.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 8ADA269E-5AB3-48A7-86FA-97ECED85D425

Got a real good look at the brake lines that rubbed. Damage is strictly cosmetic, so won’t have to rush to install the replacements when they arrive.

If there any SoCal peeps looking to purchase tires, American Tire Depot in Brea took really good care of me and their tire prices are great. I’ll definitely go back to them when I need new tires again.

Heh, I might just take you up on that offer buddy ;) Would also like to see how your Kics Neo-Chrome lugs would on the black wheel. Was very tempted to go that direction before settling on black.

My buddy Topsportsman texted for feedback on Radium’s Dual Oil Catch Cans which prompted an inspection. It’s been 3000 miles since last the check. Started with the PCV catch can. Threads are fine pitch so takes a lot of turns and it’s carpal tunnel inducing to remove and reinstall, which incentivizes adding the optional drain valve... And the slight chance of dropping the can or cross threading it.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 4C8688A7-3B51-448A-9AE6-8078CE78081A
The PCV catch can is collecting a good amount, showing it’s a good mod to add.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 0E2A9D1D-6A25-45AA-BE0F-B2500C0A1AEE
The CCV catch can has not collected much after 5k miles. There might be some type of residual stain from something.. but no liquids. Seems an unnecessary mod at this point for daily driving.

Update: Found oil in the CCV can after (2) track days, so it does work. I was mistaken and thought it was an unnecessary mod. For those that daily their cars it probably is. For those that track or drive in the high RPM ranges then the CCV catch can is probably a good investment to protect your intercooler from fouling.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R A5949831-5830-4F6E-A55E-979ACC870E10

Revising my recommendation. The Dual Radium Oil catch cans PCV/CCV and coolant expansion tank are all worthwhile mods.

Fighting a cold, which is no fun at all...However, rather than lie in bed resting (like any sane person would), decided to muster what little energy I had to push my other hobby aside and make room in the garage to park. First time the garcade has been used for its original purpose, heh.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 4F19DBCF-2D56-40F8-8B9C-AEA38A964591

Still have pesky small boost leaks I suspect are causing an intermittent high rpm at idle, which is super annoying. Plan to remove the intercooler, yank the hose clamps and replace with T-bolt style clamps, some O-ring lube and possibly some Aquanet hair spray to see if can finally eliminate these vacuum leaks and resolve the idle issue. If it doesn’t then will have to troubleshoot until it’s fixed.

Gonna also install the HKS oil cooler, Koyorad radiator and Hasport 62A RMM at the same time. I also hear a ping or a gong every now and then, when coming to a slow stop, so want to give the brakes a thorough inspection...so it may be a couple days. Will be nice working in the garage for once and not have to deal with rain or the brutal SoCal winter cold, heh.

Being sick has its pros and cons. The downside obviously is feeling like crap. The upside however is I get to work on the car without getting in trouble, because no one wants to be around me ;)
Decided to tackle the Hasport 62A RMM install.

Hasport has a terrific YouTube video which made the install a breeze:

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R D5E1AF2E-1ADC-4633-9EC5-B16AE2D67DC7

Tools needed:
Flat and Phillips screwdrivers
Rubber mallet
Small wooden hammer handle and prybar *not pictured*
Ratchet with 10mm and 17mm sockets
19mm combo wrench
safety glasses - ***tiny rocks can fall in your eyes when looking up***
Anti-seize
O-ring lube

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R E15D114A-F0C2-4DCF-8955-2C7CA08DB4E5

Removed the undercarriage shield to access the OEM RMM

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R F9DB3CF9-7BBC-4E34-806D-BE803600BC08

Removed these plastic push clips and 10mm center bolt to access the RMM. Pulled (2) additional push clips to get more clearance.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R AD5B2B2A-D581-453A-8A00-F7B1F6E4D5A4

With the pushclips out, the plastic underbody cover pulled down to access this 17mm bolt.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 11943BC5-2AB2-4D74-AFC6-9DA25103F5E0

Used the ratchet with 17mm socket to remove. It is 1 of 2 bolts that holds the RMM in place.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 3EAEE0CA-A48B-455E-9478-4E4511DC1314

wiggled the bolt and it came out easily.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 3D5F2ABB-2904-4F86-A4E9-0B82CA357D93
Used the 19mm combo to loosen the 2nd bolt.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 5A0EF4F1-0BD9-4FDC-8BA5-8892440A267C

When it was loose, pulled down on the RMM so the bolt head could clear the downpipe. Then wiggled the RMM and off it came.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 6AF11A0F-D12F-433A-B0BD-E0C4AC8F62B7

Hasport 62A RMM installed! Just need to reinstall the push clips and undercarriage. Hopefully the added NVH doesn’t drive me bonkers, lol

***update 1/24/20 - Could be my tolerance level is high, but didn’t notice any significant increase in NVH. Certainly not to an annoyance level. Engine and exhaust sound level may have increased a little. Wheel hop significantly reduced. Verdict: thumbs up
