Vehicle: 2019 si

Total tuned time: 2 years

Total tuned mileage: 35,000+ miles

Tuning device(s) used: KTuner V1.2

Tunes used: TSP 1, TSP 2

Fuel used: 4 gal 91, 6 gal e85 = 35-40% ethanol. With 91 no ethanol I can't get below .60 k count. With even 25% ethanol or more I've never seen anything but .49, ever. Makes me want to custome tune because you can advance so much on ethanol.

Additional engine mods: FBO, clutch and flywheel

Problems/issues: head gasket leak between the siamese bored cylinders. There's like .200 gap between cylinders which is too close to begin with but then there's a cooling channel right through the center on the gasket so you have two tiny .060 slivers of gasket between each cylinder!

I don't worry about anything except the head gasket again and the weak 4th gear and the syncro zap I hear if I shift 4th too quick.

Combination of lame road trips and ripping to redline a lot and even some 160mph runs.

Truthfully, with full bolt ons and high ethanol, a custom tune would be the way to go for sure.

Thanks for adding your car.

When I go custom I think I'll use drob as this tsp 2 tune is great. There's just more on the table as I'm locked on .49 no matter what. I wonder if he could do maps, like leave tsp2 map 3 on one and custom on another map because I do like this tune too.

All you can do is ask, right? Derek is great.

We're also getting some great reviews of John Vega (Phearable).

Survey note:

I'm in the process of messaging people who added surveys a year ago. My hope is that they will add a new post here updating tuned miles and any other changes.

My apologies in advance if anyone I messaged has already posted an update.

Vehicle: 2017 Civic Hatch Sport

Total tuned time: 4 years

Total tuned mileage: 101,000 miles

Tuning device(s) used: Ktuner v1

Tunes used: KTuner self tuned, custom MAF curve, 23psi boost, +2-3* timing here and there

Fuel used: Shell 93 mostly

Additional engine mods: K&N drop in filter, does that count? lol

Problems/issues: None

Driving style: AVG 28MPG for the first 60k, AVG 35MPG now

Tuning experience notes: I've self tuned all my cars in the past (15+ Mitsubishis and Nissans), just never a DI engine so I left this tune mild. I tried the TSP Stage 1 tune and was pretty disappointed. The car was just unecessarily slow in the bottom and mid range. Maybe its because CVT cars can use it too. Also the idle is set at the factory setting which alone is a deal breaker for me. So I went back to my tune and added a little more timing, and have been enjoying the car again.

Thanks for the update. 101,000 tuned miles. Excellent.

I agree the TSP tune is disappointingly soft down low. My main complaint with that tune.

You're welcome. I took a few months off but its going back up at about 1200 a week now. Let's see how far I can take the OE clutch!

Thanks for the update. How has going to such a high altitude affected performance?

Posting for second time as an update

Vehicle: 2017 Sedan LX (2.0L) Edit: It is a CVT, not 6spd

Total tuned time: 14ish months

Total tuned mileage: 23,000 miles

Tuning device(s) used: KTuner v1.2

Tunes used: Only one tune available for this car; Stage 1, lowers VTEC to 5300 RPM. Was initially lowered to 5600, but they put out a new update to give us 300rpm more of VTEC

Fuel used: 91 octane only from major gas stations (Chevron, Esso, Shell etc.)

Additional engine mods: Nothing

Problems/issues: No issues at all. Fuel economy actually increased

Driving style: Chill driving for the most part with some red light pulls and highway pulls maybe once a week.

Vehicle: 2017 Civic Type R

Total tuned time: 9 months

Total tuned mileage: 20,000 mi

Tuning device(s) used: Ktuner V1.2, Hondata Flashpro(currently)

Tunes used: (Ktuner) Multi-Stage 1 w/Dp, (Hondata Flashpro) 93oct Dp, IC w/improved throttle response and reduced power 1st and 2nd gear

Fuel used: Shell V-Power 93oct

Additional engine mods: Intake, catch can, catback and cooling mods

Problems/issues: None

Driving style: Normal with random pulls on the highway.

33,000 miles after and 3 different tuners later...

After several miles of use on the 93oct “OTS” map from Hondata I finally received all the parts that I wanted to finally custom tune my Type R.

Tuner #1 (e-tune)

While going through revisions I was concerned about the huge direct injection fuel pump pressure drop I was having randomly during wot. I brought it to the attention of the tuner to what he replied “its normal all Type R’s will experience this” so we continued until the tune was done.
A month after, summer blend gasoline switched over to winter blend. I decided to do a random datalog to see how things were doing. To my surprise I discovered knocks across multiple cylinders during wot and sometimes randomly at idle. After some adjustments from the tuner the knocks were diminished but they were still present. The tuner mentioned that If I wanted to dissapear the knock it would cost me power to what I answered reliability before power. Long story short I was not satisfied with the tune and proceeded to find another tuner.
Tuner #2 (Remote Dyno Tune)

After discussing some concerns I had with the etune it was clarified to me that the Type R’s are not supposed to experience the fuel pressure loss I was having(no its not normal). So I decided to do a first run on the etune prior to retune. Power was 352whp and 362wtq with knocks everywhere in the pull. I ended up making 360whp and about the same for torque without any signs of knock. Back to the streets and several datalogs for weeks at different temps I never found any knock nor had fuel pressure loss. Everything was perfect.

Winter is gone enter the heat! I decide to do a datalog to see how things were doing. While I had no knocks I discovered my afrs and every parameter related to fuel were swinging. I decide to get ahold of the tuner and we tune the car again with good gas. The problem was still there and I got recommended since I do not have e85 gasoline around me get a water methanol injection system. After doing research on the matter (new to this) I decided to pull the trigger and get a wmi kit. Once installed the swings got worse, The tuner recommend to change my low side fuel pump. This time common sense kicked in and I mentioned that there was no signs of fuel pressure loss or signs that the fuel pump was dying. After this conversation I stopped receiving support from him. Pretty much I got left with a bigger problem than what I had. This led me to...

Tuner #3 (Etune/Remote Dyno Tune)

I was ready to get rid of the car because of the frustration and the money spend on troubleshooting. Friend of mine recommended me to give this tuner a try. After telling him what was going on he said If you give me opportunity I can fix your car. So I decided to tune the car again for the last time. On the first revision he got my afr’s swings corrected and the car came alive, we spend a good amount of time on the street dialing everything car was spot on. Later I went to the dyno to finish it off and left with 400whp/405wtq. Back to the streets to verify everything we found some knock and he got it sorted out by removing a bit of timing.
