As many of you have seen, we began testing a potential drop-in turbocharger upgrade for the FK8 Honda Civic Type-R in July of 2019. We managed to produce 460+ horsepower and 430+ ft/lbs torque on stock engine and produced close to 500 horsepower with third party testing with our first prototype turbocharger. Though we were satisfied with the results of this particular turbocharger, we still felt that we could design and produce an even better performing upgrade for the community. Here is what we’ve come up with over the past few months:

The PRL Motorsports P600 Drop-In Turbocharger Upgrade for the 2.0L Turbo FK8 Civic Type-R platform (which can also be installed on the 2.0L Turbo Honda Accord and Acura RDX) will utilize a billet 304 stainless steel, dual ceramic ball bearing CHRA for reduced weight and improved durability. This turbocharger retains factory oil and coolant lines, as well as the factory bypass valve and wastegate actuator. Our new CHRA is also designed to increase cooling capacity with its larger water jacket.

For reference, here is a comparison between the factory Mitsubishi TD04-T/C, our prototype turbocharger, and our P600 turbocharger:

Our High Efficiency compressor wheel is significantly taller than most billet compressor wheel upgrades and features the latest technology in aerodynamics (tapered tip exducer, cutback design on blade top edge) for optimal spool and power. This High Efficiency Turbine Wheel also features the latest technology in aerodynamics for optimal spool and power.

The P600 Drop-In Turbocharger Upgrade will be capable of delivering up to 600 wheel horsepower and we also expect similar spool as our prototype unit despite being larger, which was near factory to begin with.

Stay tuned as we continue to post updates as they come, and test results once we have a production sample. Pricing is to be determined, but current ETA is the summer of 2020!

Even though it may seem like the world is ending, production on our P600 Turbocharger Upgrade for the 2017+ Honda Civic Type-R 2.0T (2018+ Accord and 2019+ RDX) has not stopped. Here are a few more pictures of one of our production-quality, prototype units that we will be testing within the next few weeks once the stainless steel turbine housings arrive.

Nope, not quite yet. We will be sure to post updates once known/ready.
I usually get your products right when you announce them. Same will more than likely happen with this turbo. I'm just curious of the size of the casting compared to stock, or if you have picture comparisons.

I was meaning the housing I guess. Was wondering if the size was significant enough where I couldn't use the stock heat shield. That's all.

I personally can’t wait for this. I’m ready to preorder as soon as you are @PRL Motorsports I will pay in full now if u could let me know what other upgrades you recommend now to be ready to drop this in. Will it include everything needed or will additional cooling or fuel upgrades available now I should add to be ready for the install? I will be having the install done at one of your PRL Honda dealerships. I currently am running the high flow PRL intake and the Borla catback exhaust with K Tuner. I won’t be tracking my car hard, 99% street fun. I have plenty of great rural roads and access to a private test track to drive on, but I have never driven the car to the point where I’ve experienced heat issues. Any preparation upgrades you could possibly share would be greatly appreciated.

We're creeping up on having this available for presale! Keep a close eye on our social media and website. This turbo will be a direct drop in and include everything you will need. Supplemental fueling options will be complimenting to this turbo and allow you to push even further.

Over the past couple of seemingly long months, we have been working to perfect the turbine housing and final machining of our P600 turbocharger upgrade. Our design team has had to go back to the drawing board a few times to make sure fitment and finish could be consistent.

Honda Civic 10th gen PRL Motorsports P600 Honda Civic Type-R FK8 Drop-In Turbocharger Upgrade Development IMG_2198_zpsgz5wc4bs

The P600 will utilize a cast 304 stainless steel turbine housing for optimal heat control, increased strength and longevity at high temperatures.

It was important that an adequate amount of material was left after machining and fitting the significantly larger High Efficiency Turbine Wheel into the factory location turbine housing. We wanted to make sure this turbine could be pushed without the chance of turbine housing failure, which we knew would hit home to racers running their setups to the max for extended periods of time.

Another obstacle we had to overcome was fitting the larger diameter shaft and ball bearing assembly into the CHRA. Quite often we hear about bearing failures and smoking with drop-in turbocharger upgrades, which is usually due to the fact that factory CHRAs were never intended to support these wheel or shaft upgrades. Our billet 304 stainless steel CHRA was completely redesigned to utilize dual ceramic ball bearings for improved durability. This turbocharger retains factory oil and coolant lines, while increasing cooling capacity with its larger water jacket.

Now that we have a handful of functioning prototypes in hand, our Product Development Team will be working to ensure proper fitment, performance and reliability. Once these units pass quality control, we will be releasing pricing and real-world data provided from in-house and third-party testing. Stay tuned for more updates!

Update:

Just because we’ve been quiet lately regarding the P600 Turbocharger Upgrade, doesn’t mean we haven’t been moving forward with this project. As some of you may have seen, we installed one of our prototype P600 turbochargers on our 2.0T Accord for future development and to test reliability. Sure, we want to offer the community an upgrade that performs well, but our primary focus here at PRL is to ensure that these turbochargers are reliable and won’t leave customers stranded.

We’re closing in on 10,000 miles hard miles with this turbocharger, and thus far the P600 has exceeded expectations. In-car performance and drivability feels fantastic, with logs hinting at spool similar to the OE FK8 turbocharger. Now that we are satisfied with initial testing, we have begun shipping our remaining prototype units to anonymous third party testers with FK8 Civic Type-Rs. Each party has been asked to monitor and provide data for us, with real-world power gains and performance being the ultimate goal. During this period of time, we will continue to rapidly tack on the mileage as we test reliability.

Once all parties have concluded testing, we will be sure to organize this data and publicly release the results, as well as pricing and an expected ship date for the first batch or turbochargers.

Im interested to see how the increase from 46mm to 54mm affects the powerband on the Type R. Granted, I would imagine that some of that might be offset by the billet wheel and dual ball bearing setup.

As someone who autocrosses and hopefully the occasionaly HPDE, I would like to shift the powerband a bit to the right and for the car to hold a bit more power towards redline while maintaining as much transient response as possible, which has pushed me towards the RS450 from Rampage which I think is 50mm. Definitely interested to see compressor maps and a dyno plot for this thing.

I’ll be glad to throw this on the @4pistons race motor along with a twin disc clutch and give it hell. I’d love the opportunity to help with this If you’re looking for more testers. Built motor say the 2.1L (I could have sworn I saw a 2.3L version of the race motor for the Type
R prior to the 2.1 being listed, was this just a late night of browsing and I mixed up the s2000 options @4piston Mandi from SlowMotion emailed yoh about what our options are but it seems your engines will be ready to ship in a couple weeks. I’m looking at the 2.3 or 2.1 race motor twin disc clutch and @PRLmotorsportd P600 or if I can’t want I’ll go with the full race kit. I just really like your products PRL and would love to get these final touches done to my car so it will be complete. Happy to test and review any products I. These categories as I think that will pretty much take me to completion of my build. Is the PRL p600 and the 4pistons race motor able to stay straight e85 or will I have to drop to a mix on the prl p600 with the 4 pistons race built motor? I assume the twin disc clutchmasters is the next bet fit my final build. How much power is the p600 looking to push out is 900-1000whp realistic on my setup or other things I need to take into consideration. I mean I’d rather have the 1000whp motor bul for longevity and I can down tune it to make 750-800 if if drives better with boost down a bit.

Hoping you all can shed some light on this I’d line to have it done in time to garage up before winter.

Your fuel mixture limitation does not have anything to do with the engine itself, you are limited by the OEM fuel system.

P600 = 600whp estimate. This is a drop in turbocharger. It you realistically want to see 1000whp you are going to need a kit that allows you to bolt on something much larger.
