1. Remove the negative terminal from your battery.

2. You’ll need a T30 torx screwdriver, an m10 Allen key, a Phillips head and flathead screwdrivers.

3. On each side of the steering column, you’ll find 1 torx bolt that need to be removed.

4. Now that the bolts are removed, the airbag console can be accessed. Make sure you don’t pull it too far out as the wires are still connected to the airbag. You just need to pull it out enough to access the connectors.

5. There are three connectors on the back of the airbag: green, grey, ground. The green and grey are removed by pulling the white tabs up. I’ve circled them for reference. The ground wire may need a flathead screwdriver to provide leverage to remove as it was somewhat difficult to fit my fingers in there.

6. Once these three connectors are disconnected, pull the airbag out and set aside

7. Place your m10 Allen key in the center bolt and remove. It will feel very hard to remove because of the loctite but keep in mind it’s just a long bolt and takes some time to remove (3 min).

8. You also want to remove the plug in connector that is directly above the center bolt (pink, black, and blue wires) It has a tab on the bottom.

9. Mark the nurling on the wheel and hub so you can easily match up the position again and have a straight centered steering wheel at the end of install.

10. Gently push on both sides of the steering wheel back and forth and the wheel will come loose off the hub.

11. Once the wheel is off, then starts the task of removing all the trim pieces. I didn’t take pictures of each step as they are pretty straight forward. All I can say is tread carefully because you can easily break the trim pieces if you try to rush or don’t pay attention to detail. The key is to wedge a plastic trim removal tool or a flathead wrapped in paper towel and carefully work your way around the trim pieces/oem button consoles.

12. There are two connectors that connect the wheel mounted buttons. These have tabs in the middle and are removed before removing the buttons.

13. Install trim pieces on new wheel and reverse the steps to reinstall the wheel.

Hope this helps.

Cheers!

Nice.

I will also point out that, when you disconnect the battery and then reconnect following installation, the dash will light up like a Christmas tree. Just don't worry and drive around a little, the lights will go away in very short order. I mention this because people tend to freak out.

What kind of steering wheel are you installing? Buddy Club?

Yes I probably should have mentioned that. Thanks.

I got a custom cf steering wheel.

I will be doing this likely tomorrow with a BC wheel. Of course when you mark the old wheel and knurl on the steering column and remove the old wheel, you lose the mark when you install the new wheel.

This is true, but with trial and error on the new wheel you can usually straighten it out by using the sharpie method. It takes a couple of tries with eyeballing and removing the wheel and reinstalling using the sharpee guides.

I'll give it shot. Thanks.

Installed the BC wheel today. Only thing that broke was the rear clip for the cruise control unit. When I was prying, the top two came undone quickly and I applied lateral pressure to the bottom one. I just JB Welded it back.

How do you like it? How’s quality, and fit & finish?

I am not a fan of the prominent BC logo.

I feel the quality is better than OEM. The OEM stitching wasn’t great as the seams were bunched and not smooth; so there were rough spots. The BC wheel feels thicker except for the bottom where it feels thinner due to the lack of leather (so maybe the leather version may be different). The fitment of the controls, trims, and airbag is like OEM and the swap over was straightforward.

This is a great upgrade to get rid of the red leather. I could have downgraded to an Si wheel, but why do that.

Hmmm, this BC wheel is tempting since the price is reasonable and it appears to be of pretty good quality. Not a big fan of the red portions of the OEM steering wheel and that would be the primary reason for wanting to switch out. However, I like the thickness and “squishiness” of the OEM wheel . . .. reminds me a little of the M Tech steering wheel from my 335i.

The biggest thing holding me back, I think, is that the carbon in the wheel is not going to match the red carbon fiber trim set that I have in my car. I hate to have multiple shades of anything. And I don’t know how I feel about the large BC logo. But the wheel is sexy indeed.

If you go with carbon zone you can request red carbon
