1. I am just curious as to which car did your civic model beat out? Excluding a different trim. What did you almost go for?
2018 WRX, 2017 Sentra Nismo, and Focus ST
2. What was the defining reason/factor?
Price, gas mileage, overall performance, and available in a coupe.

I was just hoping like the dickens that a 2017 Civic would be what I needed. My 2000 Accord and 2008 Civic have been so much more reliable than any other car I ever owned that I've gotten downright superstitious. If the 10th Gen Civic LX had not suited me I'd have probably just tried to squeeze 2-3 more years out of my old Civic, as second choice.

Luckily for me the 10th Gen LX has turned out to be an improvement in almost every way over the 8th Gen that I liked so well!

Reliability and cost of maintenance were the two major reasons I didn't buy it. I want a vehicle that will last for years with relative peace of mind. VW doesn't have a strong reputation in that area.

I was shopping my civic and the Mazda 3. The 3 was better to drive but quality-wise, it felt a class or two below the Civic. The car has horrible NVH (very loud), and had a lot less interior space. In addition, it cost more than my Civic if you tried to match the options I wanted.

Honestly I didn't consider any other vehicle. I got my civic about a month ago. Since the 10th gen model came out, I prob drove around in the lot looking at them at least once a month. Everything finally aligned for me and I went straight to the dealer without looking at any other "brand". The EX with sensing was the model of choice just because of budget and let's be honest, she's fully loaded.

For me, it was the Accord Sport 6MT vs Civic Si Sedan, both in WOP.

Accord Pros:
superior exterior styling (overall, wheels, exhaust)
interior felt overall nicer
Larger vehicle (which is also a con actually)
Potentially more reliable (tried and true K24)

Accord cons:
Larger vehicle (handled like a land yacht)
Technically a full size car
No Moon roof
Worse stereo
Worse suspension
Worse steering
Worse clutch
Worse fuel economy
Slower
Drivers seat less supportive
$1k More expensive

Civic Si pros:
Loud styling
$1k cheaper
Moon roof
Better stereo
Faster
Lighter
Much better handling
Better availability of manual transmission due to only offered with a 6MT
Better fuel economy
Technically the sedan is a mid sized car

Civic Si cons:
Exterior styling (although it's growing on me)
Cheaper interior
Potentially less reliable engine (it's pretty new and untested)

Basically what sold me on the civic was that it handles better and has more options for less money

2nd choice was a Red Honda Fit EX. I actually went to the dealership with the intention of buying the Fit. My mind was made up. Then just for fun I test drove the Civic EX-T coupe and well... that was that.

I like the HRV concept, but felt like I was sitting down iside it, and limited ability to carry large (long) items.
Civic Coupe, a bit more room, and I liked the driving position, and it came in green.
Civic Sedan...stuff fits, 4 doors for the family, gets better mpg than my old 07 Fit, 95 Integra or 84 Accord!
Been very happy with it.

Only non-Honda possibility was a Subaru Impreza wagon which also ticked all the boxes.
The Subaru dealer was the absolute best to deal with, and he knew I was a Honda guy, and would buy the Honda.
Didn't feel bad for long, as my folks bought a Subaru from him a few months later.

Went with the Civic since it was less expensive and cheaper on gas.

2018 WRX.

Chose the Si due to price, long term maintenance cost, MPG.
