Well I finally got around to dipping my WRX for the winter.

I absolutely am loving the dip on my Civic X. It is very strong and durable, but I've been wondering what everybody else wonders too. "Just how well does it peel?" "Will it affect the paint underneath?"

Well I decided that it would be good to dip the WRX and be abusive to the dip. Powerwash, use any soap, blast it with salty Michigan roads, and peel it when winter is over.

The car turned out really neat and it only cost $130 in materials.
- 1 gal Black PDS
- 3 gal Anthracite Grey
- 1 gal Silver Metalizer

I'll keep everybody posted on the peeling process and how it holds up over the winter... on both cars!

holy.... its more cheap than car shop i guess
That was me doing it myself and I already own the sprayer.

I bought everything during a 20% off sale and the Metalizer was on clearance.

Shops that are charging $800-1000 for a dip job are making BANK!! I'd seriously consider doing this on the side if I had a better place to spray. Too tight in this garage.

Well I peeled my WRX and it went fantastic! I've always been very curious about how difficult the peeling process would be. Every panel came off in one piece with the exception of the front fascia, rear fascia, and rear quarter panels (due to curves). Entire peeling process took about 90 minutes with my wife helping and we weren't rushing at all.

Why did you remove it? Got bored with it?
I dipped my WRX for two reasons. To protect it through the winter and to see what it was like to peel. My wife wants her car dipped too, but I wasn't about to put dip on a 3rd car before I experienced how difficult it was to remove first :p

Were you satisfy with the dip? How did it look after 5 months before the peeling?

Same as the day I put it on. I've had my Civic dipped since May last year and that still looks exactly the same as the day I put it on. Dip is ridiculously strong and durable. My front bumper doesn't have a flaw in it after nearly 15,000 miles of expressway driving.

I'll be using the new liquid wrap system "DipYourCar ProLine" on my wife's car soon. I'm just waiting for the DYC.com spring sale (usually 20% off everything). I'm going to be spraying this one with HVLP instead of my turbine sprayer.

My wife decided she's gonna go all out and do a color shift. We'll be doing her 2012 Camry SE in GC-47 with satin finish. Going to be awesome!

I just never understood the fascination with Plasti-dip. It doesn't last, it looks cheap, and the amount of effort it takes to prep, you might as well do it right with real paint the first time. I know everyone is different. Personally, I wouldn't want my new car looking like something a 5 year old painted, but that's just me I guess.
Well everybody has an opinion. The problem is everybody is always comparing it to paint. It's not paint. If you want to compare it to something, compare it to vinyl wrapping.

My fascination with it is:
- I can have my car any color I want and change it whenever I want
- My OEM paint is 100% protected from scratches, saps, bird droppings, acid, everything
- It's incredibly fun to spray

There is a very high possibility that I'll use AutoFlex when I decide to change my Civic. Find something bad to say about AutoFlex, I dare ya :p

This stuff peels off too.

As much as I would LOVE to do this to my civic hatchback, I've seen (on youtube) and heard horror stories about it wrecking the clearcoat of the paint underneath... Well that and I don't have a garage to do the spray in so I'd have to pay a shop which around here all charge a ridiculous amount for.

It all boils down to doing the job correct or not. EVERY horror story about dip is because people either didn't spray thick enough or the paint was not original and was done improperly. My WRX has been repainted by the previous owner and I had no issues at all. Remember, there are tens of thousands of success stories you're not hearing about. If you have questions, join the DipYourCar Community Facebook page. Everybody on there is very helpful and share all their experiences.

You might even be able to find somebody local to you that will spray your car for you. I'm getting ready to spray my wife's car this weekend. I'm going to start advertising that I will spray your car for materials + $200 labor. Definitely cheaper than any shop and it's the same cost as if you bought the low-end equipment to spray yourself. I have a $600 portable sprayer and HVLP for ProLine. (Look at me advertising already:rolleyes:)

Yes, I just called 2 shops JUST to inquire about what it would cost to dip my car if you will... $3000CAD @ one place and $2800CAD at another... that's $2225 USD pretty much. That's just ridiculous. If I had a garage I would try it out myself but like I said I don't have one of my own to do it in.
