I got the Simoniz GlassCoat applied by a body shop, it cost me $350. 7 year warranty from Simoniz.

The dealer wanted $1000 for their paint protection, same 7 year warranty.

On the undercoating, there is a nearly full panel under the car for aero purposes.

And since I live in Calif I do not have to worry about road salts and sanding for snow eating my car under-body away. So I can't help you on that one.

Sorry for the dumb question but is Simoniz the brand of the glass coat? And if so, is that the same brand Honda dealers use?

Oh, and what part of CA is the body shop you used? Just wondering if it was near SD, heh, looking for body shops here.

GlassCoat is a Simoniz product similar to other paint protection products from other manufacturers.

The dealer had something called Armour coat I believe.

Huge mark up for them on that at $1000

I live in the SF bay area, about 500 miles north of you.

Look for shops around you I'm sure they will do something similar for a lot less than the dealer.

I got Xzilon paint protectant applied and also the interior treatment done for $499 CDN by the dealer. They give a ten year warranty inside and out so it must be good. So far road grime and salt just wash off with a pressure washer (not too close).

I had a similar product (final coat I think) installed on my old 2006 Civic and the paint still looks good after much abuse.

I'm having the paint protection done on my incoming WOP Touring. Believe it is Diamond Kote. Cost is $399 but it was part of the package deal, along with all-weather mats and wheel locks, thrown in as I paid full list.

We had the same package on our HRV. Too soon to report on durability but it sure does wash up nice and easy.

Are body shops where I should go to have interior illumination installed?

Depends on what you are doing.

Can you do it yourself?

Just changing bulbs is very simple.

Strips aren't difficult if you are mechanically inclined.

You can look at the installation instructions and decide for yourself if you should attempt it yourself. You can also buy OEM parts on the internet and have them installed by your local dealer.

I was in the financing office for over an hour tonight debating add-ons for my purchase. The Simoniz Glasscoat protection started out at $795, and after a bunch of back-and-forth was down to $425. He said the dealer's cost is $262.

I'm debating this and the "Tire and Wheel Protection" from "R.O.A.D. InTire". It's 5 yrs, unlimited miles and covers all future tires (no matter where they are purchased).

Has anyone looked into the Simoniz warrantly closely for loopholes, or know of anyone actually getting paint repaired through the warranty? I'm sceptical. Most paint damage is from road debris. It doesn't seem to cover that. Most paint damage from what they do cover takes much longer than 7 years.

As far as the product, it doesn't seem like anything more than any coating will provide. And no different that what the dealers have long sold as paint sealant. Seems about as scammy as the dealer's rustproofing, fabric protection ($5 Scotchguard), etc.

Is this not it?

And the dealer buys larger quantites, so it's cheaper. And it just takes the dealer a few minutes to apply it. HUGE profit.

Their test:

Any car wax will do this too! Remember all the tests like this for wax years ago?

"I had it on my Cobalt SS. Completely worthelss and offers no stain repelent at all... I had some sprite touch the side of the roof liner and left a mark. And the body coat did nothing either... "
"My shop fixed a Civic last year... the customer complained because she paid for simonizing at the dealer, but we didn't do it since the insurance didn't tell us to. The adjuster came out and talked to her and said he would pay for the simonizing. Guess how much it cost to get done/outsourced.... $40. She paid about $400, and the dealer sends it out, lol. Genius scam by dealers... "

"They pray on you so you will take care of your new investment. Would be interesting to read the warranty. I know of more than one who went back after a year and said there is no protection left and found out *you* have obligations to reapply additional layers and failures were your fault and any claim has so many hoops to jump through its not worth following through to recoupe $400. "

etc.
I've read a lot more than this about it, but didn't want to post every link. Google will give you those. There's a lot out there, mostly similar to the above. But probably close to 99% of what I've read says it's a scam. Very few positive things about it.

I have pine trees that sap all over my driveway, so I mainly wanted the protection from that.

That said, I've read the contract over quickly, and the loopholes/outs are:
- it doesn't cover chips
- it doesn't cover flaking
- it doesn't cover repaired surfaces that aren't treated

It DOES cover: bugs, bird droppings, sap, acid rain, etc that damages the paint. Also, fading of the paint.

I can not find *any* incidents online where someone actually used the warranty. You would think someone that's used it would have posted about it.

Save your money and do it yourself. Products like Gloss-Coat or Klasse provide the same protection at a fraction of the cost.

Application of the pro version of Gloss-Coat is $1k and lasts 5-7 years (what your dealership is doing or similar product). Application of the consumer version is $100 and lasts 2 years.
