Hello CivicX Enthusiasts!
The popular and highly competitive world of professional racing is constantly bringing gifted drivers and the latest and greatest vehicles to compete. In the Pirelli World Challenge circuit, that's no exception. If you've paid attention to PWC over the last few years there are some seriously gifted drivers running the courses and there are multiple teams using Honda/Acura vehicles to try and capture the win. We've been lucky to work with and sponsor several teams and drivers in the PWC circuit over the last few years.
This time KTuner had the opportunity to work with the Shea Racing crew on their newly purchased 2017 Civic Si, which they picked up only four weeks ago as a production car and immediately transformed into a race car. The new Shea Racing Civic Si made its debut this past weekend at Utah Motorsports Campus competing in the TCA class. Having worked with Shea Racing previously on their TC Class V6 Accords and their previous generation TCA Class Civic Si we knew to expect an exciting weekend of racing.
Equipped with their KTunerFlash V2 for easy logging of test laps and easy switching of tunes we helped the team dial in testing parameters and looked over their initial data to make sure everything was on par. After only two tune modifications they headed out for qualifying early Saturday morning. On the last lap of qualifying Shea Holbrook really put the car through some aggressive paces going from position seven all the way to position one, securing a pole and great starting position. She set the record lap for the session! They were quickly pulled into impound for inspection, the car was performing phenomenally and it was only the first time out beyond the practice sessions. It was running so well that after reviewing the data and checking the part numbers on the turbo and other components to verify it was all factory they added a handicap to the car for the official race. A handicap of 75lbs. That's pretty substantial.
Heading out for Race 1 with a handicap they weren't sure what to expect, but Shea was absolutely determined to give it her all. Leading the class for a good majority of the race Shea found herself off-course one time, giving the closely tailing Mazda Miata a way to take the lead. She hopped back on track and pursued the Mazda, catching him in the straights, and they battled it out until Shea was able to regain the lead. On the last lap the Mazda was extremely close behind, but through upcoming traffic from the slower TCB class Shea was able to maneuver the nimble Civic through and leave the Mazda behind... almost 2 full seconds... to take the Race 1 Win!

With the same hopes for Race 2 they headed back out on track. Unfortunately there was a multi-car accident on the first turn at the very start of the race, delaying Shea, and giving leading position to other racers in the class, but she fought fiercely to catch back up. With only a few minutes left in the race the troublesome Race 2 showed its hand once again. A small run off-course ended up throwing a rock into the radiator ending the session early for the Shea Racing Civic Si.
There was some exciting action packed racing this weekend and KTuner is very excited to be on board to see how this perfect combo, driver and machine, will fair in upcoming PWC races as they perfect the platform. Hats off to Shea and the crew of Shea Racing.
I urge fellow enthusiasts to support and follow Shea Racing with their endeavors in Pirelli World Challenge as they try to create a solid name for the Civic Si platform. They also have another 1.5T racing under their team, so it's doubly interesting to see how they maneuver the field!
