Greddy is doing some cooling mods to the new CTR. New intercooler and oil cooler. Should have some updates with the oil cooler data at the track tomorrow at Button Willow.

Had a Greddy EVO 2 cat back on my 8th gen civic SI, loved it! Anxious to see what they come up with.

Here is a recap of Friday’s testing. Weather started in the morning at ~67F and eventually rose to 89F by Noon. Light dust in the morning but clean by second session, average levels traffic through the day. ECT, IAT, MAP, RPM, Speed and time were recorded via an AiM SoloDL connected to the OBDII port. Honda Civic Type R “FN2” CAN protocol was used to gather data. Some variables were not available. An additional Boost Pressure, Oil temperature and pressure were gathered via Greddy Infometer. Only the Max data is recoded by the unit but the gauge readings are available via GoPro recording.

In session 1, the car was run with Greddy intercooler and no oil cooler as baseline. Session temperature was ~67F light dust, low traffic. Similar results to our initial test, the ECU switches to a safety mode as ECT rises, roughly after 2 hot laps. However, there was a lower per-lap delta in ECT vs our original test but this is likely due in part to lower ambient temperatures. IAT was an average of 94~99F. Oil Temperature was recorded at a high of 270F. Due to rapidly increasing ambient temperatures, we chose to add the oil cooler immediately instead of another stock baseline data set.

In session 2, we reset the Infometer data and added the Greddy oil cooler. Ambient had risen to ~73F, clean track moderate traffic. Same delta in ECT as the morning(~15F) slightly lower average despite a higher IAT average of 104~106F. Oil Temperature saw a significant improvement with peak at 254F. The car was able to a full session, 6 laps, without the ECU going into safety. A third session in similar conditions yielded the same results. Ambient ~85, IAT Average 106, ECT average 199, peak OilT 254, 5 lap session.

We ran the last session in the hottest condition. Ambient temperature was ~89F. IAT average rose to 114F, ECT average rose to 209, peak of 114. The ECU began safety mode after one lap. Oil temperature peak was recorded at 256F.

I’ve attached a data plot(Fig. 1) comparing the morning baseline(Yellow), laps from the following two sessions with oil coolers(blue and green) and the lap from the afternoon for comparison(Red).

Without a doubt, the oil cooler should be a requirement for any track going CTR. 270F in cool running conditions is dangerously high. The oil cooler benefited the engine heat efficiency as a whole, keeping ECT down even as IAT and ambient temperatures went up. Through the morning, ECT delta remained the same through the day. This reinforces the idea that the coolant system, primarily the radiator is insufficient. However, compared to our initial test(08/08) where conditions were similar to the afternoon session on 09/15, the ECT delta has improved. See Fig. 2 for plots between 08/08 and 09/15 in similar ~87F ambient. I’ve also plotted the MAP and GPS speed as a reference for the Intercooler. Mike noted that the boost response was noticeably “laggy” compared to when it was stock. It’s worth noting that the peak boost looks the same between the two laps.
