Hello All

I am the happy owner of a Black Civic 2016 EX-L and so far I am veyr happy with the Car. The quesiton that i have is regarding the S Gear for it. Can i assume that this gear on the EX-L is some kind of "sports" mode?

Yes.

From the manual it describes it as....

Drive (S)
  • ● Better acceleration.
  • ● Increased engine braking.
  • ● Going up or down hills.

Something I've been wondering about this (and general automatic transmissions):

Is it okay to "shift" into and out of these lower gears while driving or is this something that should be done at a stand still? I'm assuming it's fine and even meant to be done while in motion, but I'd like a second opinion to ease my mind.

i would love to know the answer to that question too although the manual indicates that it can be done while the car is in motion...

Safe to do in motion. Car knows enough to not hurt itself.

I was going into S and accidentally went too far to L on the highway. Big "oh sh**" moment but RPM's went up to about 4K and it was fine. I figure the computer knows how far to let it go based on speed.

My last car was manual so I'm happy to see the car bump up RPM's on downhill for engine braking even in D mode.

N, D, S, and L can all be shifted in between each other in motion, just like any other car. R and P you need to be stopped. Switching between the different modes all have different use cases, namely if you lose control of your vehicle and need to cut the engine from the wheels (N) or reduce how fast the wheels will spin (L). I recommend making these changes at a stop, but they can be switched while in motion.

The most useful cases for D->L are almost always in motion.

Does anyone know if the car simulate shifts at full throttle in D mode also? or just S mode?

today i tested driving with the S gear on my way to the office. you can feel the difference specially on the acceleration. it wont be my normal driving move but it is good to know that is there when you need it.

I pretty much drive mine like a two-speed all the time. "Downshift" into S going into a corrner, "upshift" into D after I'm out, etc.
