I'll see if Enkei can make RPF1 18x8.5 +60, that would be a nice set for people to run as daily wheels.
So except for when I needed snow tires, I have never put anything other than OEM wheels on my cars. As a result, pretty much all I know about wheels and tire sizes is what I've read over the past week or so. I would appreciate any help the forum could give me on speccing new wheels and tires.

I plan to use my CTR as a daily driver. My 2 reasons for wanting smaller wheels are (1) I don't want to damage the rims on potholes or other road hazards and (2) as a DD, I think I might want to put on 3-season tires rather than summer tires over the winter. I don't need snow tires but there may be times I'm driving at 30Âş F. Right now I don't see any good 3-season tires available at 245/30 ZR 20.

That said, I would like to stay as close to stock as possible while moving to a smaller wheel. My recent research suggested that the best bet would be a 19x8.5 +60 wheels with 245/35 ZR 19 tires. Does that seem right?

Some tire calculator I found suggests that for 18x8.5 +60 wheels the right size tire would be 225/45 ZR 18. Does that seem like the right size to keep as close to stock as possible while switching to a smaller wheel?

What are pros and cons of 18" vs 19" wheels? What is the least amount I can spend on wheels without seriously sacrificing performance or safety?

Alternately, I see some people are putting 245/35 ZR 20 tires on the OEM wheels. How much extra pothole protection does that give? At least there are a bunch of good all-season tire choices in that size. (EDIT: Answer is 245/35 ZR 20 have the same sidewall height as 245/35 ZR 19, and since bigger wheels fare better on potholes, the 20" wheels will have somewhat better pothole protection with /35 tires than the 19" wheels will. Either way, 18" wheels, which are much more common than 19" wheels, will still offer another 0.5" of sidewall for a total of 1.0" extra sidewall versus the 20" wheels, so I will be looking at 245/40 ZR 18 on 18" wheels.)

Yes LongRun, I think 19x8.5 +60 wheels with 245/35 ZR 19 tires are a great choice. It's what I want too!

I'm interested in retaining zero torque steer. With ET60 wheels the car is set up for zero torque steer and anything else will add torque steer.

Sure, ET45 might be worse than ET55 and you might not notice torque steer with ET55, but even ET55 is still a step in the wrong direction (there's no arguing "well I drove the car and it felt fine," it's physics, it will have more torque steer, whether you notice it or not :) ). I respect people who want filled out fenders, but it's not what I'm interested in.

Going forward I think there will be more max performance summer tires (and ultra all season) in 19 inch sizes than 18 inch.

I'm very excited that aftermarket wheels in 19X8.5 in this size can weigh about 21 pounds. That means a set will drop 32 pounds off the CTR, which is huge.

Well I have bad news for those waiting on the 19 inch CE28N. Their JWL certification for that wheel in 19's expired so they will not manufacture any more in that size. Basically it requires a bit or work and $$ to re-certify and if the size is not something they plan on mass producing then it's not worth it to them. I'll keep trying but for now it seems that 19-inch CE28N are a no go. Sorry guys

Actually, thinking and researching more about it, I think I'm going to go with 18x8.5 +60 wheels if I can find them and put 245/40 ZR 18 tires on them. That increases the sidewall from 2.9 inches to 3.9 inches and is still pretty close to stock overall diameter (0.3-0.4% smaller depending on the calculator you use). Then again, the cheapest option might just be a good tire and wheel insurance policy on the stock wheels.
