Bubb2521, thanks for the memory. I owned that car for a time. I owned the model that preceded it also, the 600 sedan, and it got 50mpg.

If you don't dip into the turbo...
Same goes for NA - if you don't dip into the meat of the power band. :)

At the same power level in the power band, the turbo will give you better MPG (lower RPM).

I was hoping the 39 rating on the earlier billboard was just a placeholder. 42 is indeed "class leading," and given that Honda tends to be cautious with its numbers, I think it might be possible in real world driving, say without the AC and going 65, to get as high as 45.

Just yesterday I took I highway trip in my wife's 2013 Accord and got 39 mpg, which is 3 higher than the official rating.

Hahaha. 1.5L as well.

1975 1500lbs, 75hp, 42 mpg highway, 0-60 14-15s
2015 3000lbs, 175hp, 42 mpg highway 0-60 7-7.5s
And because of complaints in decades past from consumers that couldn't hit the EPA numbers, the EPA twice revised downward the window sticker numbers, first in c. 1985 and then again in c. 2006. In other words, an EPA highway rating of 42 back in 1975 would probably equal about 36 on today's cars.

Hahahahah well they're back!
Love that old ad! Thanks.

What's interesting is that it claims that at 55 mpg the rpm level drops to 2750, which was pretty good for the time. But a Civic or Accord with a CVT probably gets down to about 1500 rpm at at a steady 55 mph, and is probably at around 2100 at 70 mph.
