Hi. I am new here.. and interested in new civic hatch. I prefer to have a MT. also sport over Lx bc I want some more features. (would be better if ex comes w/ MT.) But I wanna see if regular gas would be OK in terms of reliability of engine. I guess the word recommended could be used differently by each manufacturers. I have 2005 miata now and that recommend premium, and the my local miata specialist said it is OK to use regular. But for civic hatch, they use turbo, so I am worried.

I saw a post with owner's manual pdf file on this forum, and the guy pointed out that

on p.519 (model w/ the label 'Premium Recommended')
Use of a lower octane gasoline can cause occasional metallic knocking noise in the
engine and will result in decreased engine performance.
Use of a gasoline with a pump octane less than 87 can lead to engine damage.

They don't say, they will guarantee using regular.

I watched a lot of Youtube videos, and I found only one channel answered my question

if you watch from 2:57 the guy said regular fuel is normal fuel for the whole lineup from 3:20. The video introduced him as 'Honda Civic Product Planner' from 1:10. I am short in English, but I think he said it is ok to use regular for whole lineup including sport trim. Do you guys think so too? I believe since he works for Honda Civic, his statement could be considered official. I watched something Canadian car review posted in the forum, and the Honda guy in the video avoided to answer the question about the premium fuel. So I am confusing what he was worrying about and why he couldn't say just use regular and use premium when you feel like.

Do whatever you want. I'm not sure how the 1.5Ts rated for premium fuel fare with regular but I know my friend's ILX 2.4 suffered in terms of mileage but no knocking or damage. Keep in mind, the money you save putting regular in might be completely offset by the suffering mileage.

But Honda says use Premium, so you gotta pay to play.

I think thats how they generate the extra 6hp, with a fuel map tune and using 91. Tbh, I would just stick with 91 when the manual said so. It is only $1 or 2 more per fuel up. I understand it is about $100 to $200 more per year, but if you are worrying about that. You might wanna stick with the 87 1.5T cars.

Try both grades of gas. You can instantly save money in the short term but if the ECU is tuned for 91, that doesn't mean putting 87 in it will revert it to 174 HP. Due to the tune, it can sandbag the engine to 150HP let's say and also decrease mileage down to 28-27 in the city. Now it's not worth it...

Thanks for the replies.. I am sorry for bringing this topic again.. I saw couple of posts here. The main reason I post this topic again was the Honda civic Planner on the video. Because the guy says like I can use premium when I want 6 hp more. But now, I think he didn't mean the car is mean to be run with regular anyways. I may stick to my plan with LX.

I can report this is not true at all. My Sport drives just fine with regular, and feels like the non Sport sedans that i drove. Too early to report gas mileage but ill do that after I refill it.

Had I not driven my car with premium I'd be fine with regular, but premium gives it an edge which is worth the 1.3 cents per mile.

In Canada filling up with premium gas would add about $7 or well over $300 per year. Don't believe the average Civic turbo driver would notice the very few additional ponies. In my humble opinion I believe Honda blew it. Our SI owners expect premium performance and wouldn't flinch at the premium gas requirement.

I agree Colin. Not sure where people here are saying premium is so cheap. Here locally it's over 50 cents a gallon difference. Hey, the Civic is still an economy car unless you go Si or Type R. Spending 300 or 400 extra bucks a year on gas to get a measly 6 hp wouldn't make much sense to me. What does is gain you... maybe 1 or 2/10 of a second on a 0-60 run? I'd rather pocket that savings and buy a new tablet or put food on the table or something. :)

The premium gas recommendation for 6 hp, just like the huge fake plastic vents, is a decision by Honda I'll never understand.

I have same feeling with the opinions that Honda is doing something weird with that sport. But I think we need to see the dyno curve how the torque differs in mid rpm range. or wait for some review channels do a comparison test.
And in my area(ATL), premium is about to charge 40 cents more. I drive 20k miles a year, and 20k/33mpg(hopefully) is about to be 600, and 600 times $0.4 is $240. I may need to sign up for Costco membership if I go for sport.

I just factored in that I would be paying premium before I bought the car.
In Canada premium is 91 or higher. It will add up over time but I definitely would have gone coupe EX-T or looked at the LX hatch if I didn't want to pay for premium fuel.

Good luck with whichever route you go.

Does anyone know on what fuel grade will the sport give the extra 6hp? Here the normal is 91 and the premium is 95 and the ultimate is 98.

Wow 98? We have 91 and 94. I haven't looked at the manual but in Canada 91 is considered premium.
