Here is a VIN translator that we've put together. Hopefully it'll prove helpful and also fun for owners to run their VINs through this.


2016+ Honda Civic VIN translator:

Here are the components of the VIN for 2016+ Honda Civics:

Numbers 1-3 are the World Manufacturer Index (WMI) and tells you the country/region/plant car is made:

• 2HG = Alliston plant
• 19X = Indiana plant
• SHH = Swindon plant

Numbers 4-9 are the Vehicle Description Section (VDS) which tells you the model, body type, transmission, engine:

• Numbers 4-6 (model line and engine type)
  • FC1 = Sedan Turbo (1.5T)
  • FC2 = Sedan N/A (2.0L)
  • [__] = Coupe
  • [__] = Hatchback
• Number 7 (body and transmission)
  • F = 4 door sedan CVT
  • E = 4 door sedan Manual
• Number 8 (equipment trim level)
  • 3 = Sedan EX-T
  • 4 = Sedan EX-T with Honda Sensing
  • 5 = Sedan LX
  • 6 = Sedan LX with Honda Sensing
  • 7 Sedan EX and EX-TL
  • 8 = Sedan EX with Honda Sensing / EX-T with Honda Sensing
  • 9 = Sedan Touring
• Number 9 (check digit)

Numbers 10-17 are the Vehicle Identification Section (VIS) and identify the particular vehicle:

• Number 10
  • G = 2016 model year
• Number 11
  • H = Alliston plant
  • E = Indiana plant
  • [_] = Swindon plant
• Numbers 12-17
  • Sequential production number - i.e. #XX,XXX Civic made at the particular plant

So for example, the first 2016 Civic produced at the Indiana plant had a VIN of 19XFC1F74GE000001. This tells us that the car was made in the Indiana plant (19X), is a turbo sedan (FC1), 4 door sedan w/ CVT (F), 2016 model year (G), produced in Indiana (E), and is the first 10th gen Civic off the line at Indiana (000001).

Some codes are still to come - body codes of the coupe and hatchback and code for the Swindon plant.

My incoming 'Touring' VIN shows '9' in this field.
On a printout of incoming Civic's I have there is also a '4' and '7' in this field.

On our incoming car numbers 12-17 starts '10 - - - -'. Looks like maybe the Canadian Civic's started numbering at 100,000. Our 2016 HRV also starts '10 - - - -'.

Where on the vehicle does Honda indicate the original colour? This would be critical for a restorer if car documents are missing.

Where on the vehicle does Honda indicate the original colour? This would be critical for a restorer if car documents are missing.

I don't know about the 2016 Civic or Canadian cars, but my 8 prior Hondas all had a color code sticker on the drivers door jamb.

Wow '5 - - - - -' that's a surprise. This first number must have some meaning.

Here in Indiana the Honda dealer said all his 2016 Civics have came from Canada. That the US Honda factories were having issues with new production.

Mine is number 3234 to come out of the Indiana plant. This is cool!
