The AC compressor definitely wines up as you come to a stop. it does it in but mine when it's on. And it kind of sounds like your audio clip there so that's why I'm suggesting it.

Not exactly sure the reason behind it. Something to do with only using as much power as it needs a given time.

This is exactly what mine behaved like. If I had to describe it... it would sound like this:

Obviously not as long.. but definitely a more deeper sound. It sounded like almost an electrical battery charging sound or something.

I drove a 10th gen EX (automatic) today.. only 450 KMs / 279 miles on it and I heard the same thing when I came to a stop. I'm starting to believe this might be normal for 10th gens.
This is almost exactly the same noise and not to mention incredibly creepy when heard by itself...

Question for OP:

Are you engine braking down to a stop? 3rd gear all the way down to 1k RPM then push in the clutch?

It has been 30 degrees here for the past week or so. So the A/C is def not on.
If the system is in AUTO or if defrost or bi-level is selected, it can still run the compressor even when it's cold in order to dehumidify the air and reduce the chance of window fogging.

So I've noticed my mpg going to S over the past 3 weeks. I was able to get 40+mpg going to work. Now I struggle to get it above 34mpg (same driving style and route). But I have started to pay more attention to a whine the car has been making every time I come to a stop. When I start the car I can hear the fuel pump priming (normal). But EVERY time I bring the car to a stop or slow down to a very slow roll off the accelerator, I can hear it whining/whirling again. I can only assume this is the fuel pump after my years of car experience.

Before I go back to the dealer with all this, I wanted to see if anyone else can confirm they hear this whine when you stop your car.
I hear the in-tank fuel pump if I turn the ignition on without starting the engine and I can hear the cooling fan ramp up and down at times, but only when I'm in an enclosed garage.

Unlike most vehicles with relay-controlled, single or dual-speed cooling fans, the Civic has a variable-speed cooling fan that uses a three-phase motor driven by a variable frequency drive. It can make "turbine-like" sounds when it changes speeds.

The decrease in fuel economy you've noticed is almost certainly due to driving conditions or fuel blend. If there was a problem with the fuel pump or other component that affected fuel economy, you'd see an "emissions system problem" warning message.

Let's not forget 'Winter-blend' fuels, as far as decreasing mileage goes...
I would agree with this....but I've watched my mpg slowly decrease over the past month now 40+ down to <34mpg.

Question for OP:

Clutch in....pull it out of gear...coast/brake to a stop when possible. I'll downshift when on the highway to rev match, but rarely to a full stop.

If the system is in AUTO or if defrost or bi-level is selected, it can still run the compressor even when it's cold in order to dehumidify the air and reduce the chance of window fogging.

Thanks for that. But after the first post I took care to really listen for whirling sound. It is def coming from behind the front seats. I've heard on separate occasions the aforementioned chirping cricket sound and the fans kicking on (just like you, only while in my garage before leave).

As far as the mpg...I can with honest say my driving style has not changed, In fact, I've put WAY too much effort in to getting it back up. And even with this I never even saw it jump above 34mpg when previously without driving like this I was getting 40+. And the gas is coming from the same exact gas station since I've had the car. The fact that I am losing mpg AND I am getting the priming sounds consistently when I drive tells me otherwise. I am having the transmission dropped my Honda very soon and this could also have a big impact on the MPG. But like I said, I wanted to see if anyone else was getting this consistent sound while driving, not just at start up.

I appreciate the knowledge with a car I am not 100% familiar with though!

This evening, I took my parents for a drive across town to check out a new road that just opened. I had the radio off, we were driving slowly, and the new pavement was smooth and quiet, so it was a perfect opportunity to hear sounds that I normally wouldn't hear when I'm alone in the car zipping around with the radio going. We were just loafing along checking out the new road when I noticed that every time we stopped, I heard the cooling fan come on with that familiar, turbine-like whine. Apparently, the fan shuts off above a certain speed then comes back on again below a certain speed, which is typical logic for electronically-controlled cooling fans in modern vehicles (unless the engine is very hot or the air conditioner is under a heavy load). While stopped, I could switch off the HVAC then turn it back on again - a few seconds after turning it back on, I heard the same sound while still stopped.

It "sounds" like you're hearing a different noise that I've never heard and can't identify.

Zroger the sound that you just described above is what I was describing earlier in the thread. I assumed it was the fan but I wasn't 100% sure so I didn't want to say. But I think Op is hearing something different as well.

I have heard this noise too coming from the engine bay (lotsa new noises in these cars lol). Mine is very similar, but coming from behind the front seats. I appreciate the time you took to check this out though!

Looks like I'll have just one more thing to bring up next week to Honda. Big thanks to the hive-mind here!

So just to update/close out this thread...Honda had my car for 2 weeks working on the transmission and they looked at this issue as well. They said there was a bad/dying relay causing this to happen. But they also mentioned there were issues with the transmission that may have been contributing to inefficiency of the car and the MPG.

When you first start the car listen for a whirling sound coming from just behind the rear seats. That is the fuel pump priming, and that is the sound I had every time I stopped.

Doesn't matter. It will stay on if you don't manually turn it off.
I just had that happening with mine today. I kept noticing a whining sound every time I came to a stop. What I had done is hit the Auto button for the climate control and that apparently turned back on the AC. I hit the climate control button and turned AC off and now it has stopped.

I noticed this on mine too. Haven’t driven mine much lately but I drive about 40 miles today and I could hear it when I came to a stop. I assume it’s prerrt normal for the mode if everyone is hearing it.
