Si's have defective clutch?

Does your Si have a clutch that slips when its cold (first 5 10 min of driving after car has sat)?

Agreed. A clutch should never slip under any conditions at factory power levels. Otherwise, the manufacturer would face additional liability and potential warranty claims. In my case, I work at a location right off busy, four-lane, divided highway with no entrance ramp. Leaving often requires getting up to speed very quickly. It would be bad if my clutch slipped under these conditions.

I agree with both of you... I've never had a clutch slip, regardless of temp or how 'warmed up' the vehicle is. Sorta like saying there is 'normal' oil usage...there isn't.

I hadn't noticed any clutch slipping until today. I was pushing through second gear, and at about 4k the clutch broke free and the engine raced to red line.

No excuse for oil burning, as it could lead to engine wear/ failure down the road, but clutch slippage goes away when the car is warmed up and the car never had any issues so far. Has any of you had premature clutch failure when this happened? Will likely bring the car in for the dealer to check it out.

This is from my Honda salesman. Teenage kid with 1300 miles on his Si. This is why you don’t buy kids new cars. This is not a defective clutch. This is a clutch that has been beaten to hell for 1300 straight miles.

Honda will do a one time courtesy to replace it under warranty. More than I would do.

I'm actually surprised that a clutch can be burned up in 1,300 miles with stock power levels without blatant and intentional extreme abuse like taking off in second gear at WOT every single time or maliciously forcing the clutch to slip with the intent of burning it up.

So, Exedy makes the OEM clutch? Or is this not actually from a Civic Si? Or was the OEM clutch replaced with an aftermarket clutch?
He didn’t have a ton of details other than it is from an Si and it is the factory clutch, or what’s left of it. I asked if they checked the ECU for boost history, but he didn’t have that information. If you are running a +6 or +9 tune, this is likely a very real occurrence.

As a person who was once a teenager that beat the heck out of a Ford Tempo and Taurus clutches, this surprises me a lot. I have personally done countless red line RPM clutch drops (didn't know any better then) and never had this happen. My buddy and I beat his Tempo for 2 years straight and he sold it running and driving on the factory clutch. This does not sit well with me for 1300 miles....

I've never heard of clutch slipping being normal for a street vehicle.
You know that the clutch delay valve slips your clutch automatically on take-off right? This has been build into cars since the 90s.

Also for the people that are slipping during WOT. Are you sure that your timing is correct? If you change gears and apply gas at the biting point, you will LIGHT UP your clutch. Get on the gas when you are 75% out with your pedal travel. Not half. Not earlier.

Finally, if something gets too cold, remember that condensation can form. What happens on a wet surface? You have the potential to slip on it.

Water vapor doesn't condense on a surface unless that surface is colder than the surrounding air and there is sufficient water vapor present...because physics. Temperature alone does not cause condensation. In the unlikely event water vapor does condense on the surfaces of the clutch, heat caused by friction will quickly raise the temperature above dew point causing the water vapor to evaporate...again, because physics. :)
