What is this?

Forgive my really n00b question but I am wondering what this part of my front dash is? Is it a housing chamber for some wiring or something?

its for the Automatic setting for the headlights, is senses the ambient light and turns the headlights on/off accordingly.

Ah, so it is probably not a good idea to mount a GPS there or something that will block it.

It is a part of the dashboard.

its a light intensity sensor for the heating system. The sensor for the head lights is fitted to the windscreen.
Either way dont cover it

I thought that was for GPS signal receiver.

I was going to stick my radar detector on top of it, but I'll just stick it a little bit to the right, it just suction cups to the windshield anyway so not really a big deal

I mount my GPS on the left corner. When I look at GPS I see road and cars coming, not sidewalk
