Let me see if i understood your process:

1. Restore iphone to factory settings (not restoring the data backup)
2. manually install apps.

this is encouraging indeed. please keep us posted. i will do that this weekend and report back.
Yes...but as I just replied to in the other thread, I can confirm that enabling Apple Music in the culprit in my case. Kinda thought it was the problem all along but now I have pretty good proof and confirmation from others that it is. Fingers crossed it will be resolved soon.

Apple call me back tonight to see how it was doing. I told them that it was working flawlessly with iCloud music library disable. They told me the error is on Honda's side and they've found the issue and are working closely with them to get it pushed out in a Honda service update. No ETA unfortunately but at least they pinpointed the cause.
I know the answer is "no" but I thought I'd "bump" this thread anyway...

Anyone heard any updates on this?

At one point, in another thread, I thought I remembered reading that someone through that Honda was targeting January for a headunit firmware update.

I haven't tried using CarPlay in a month and have been using Bluetooth for listening to my music library / other audio stuff.

I've been eagerly awaiting a fix as well. I will say, disabling my iCloud music library has completely fixed any and all issues I was having. This includes flickering screens, reboots, device not connected issues, and general instabilities. Since doing so, I've been on a 3.5 hour road trip using maps alongside audio books, Pocketcasts, or apple music the entire time. Zero issues there or back. So I'm alright with waiting until they come up with a fix. It's a slight inconvenience not being able to save music for later, but the complete stability is worth it for now.

I took my Civic to the dealership this week to see if they could do anything about the "No Device Connected" issue. Still nothing. They have no software updates or anything else to announce.

They told me that they reset my unit and even reconnected the battery, but that didn't help. I still get the "No Device Connected" error literally every single time I use my car. It turn on the car, plug in my iPhone, and about 2 minutes later, the screen goes black and I get that error message. I then unplug it, plug it in again, and then it works fine until the next time I restart the car.

This happens EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. And it's not just frustrating but actually dangerous, because I frequently find myself having to unplug and replug in my phone while driving.

For reference, I'm on 186.69 and I have been since I bought my Civic last April. It's a 2016 Canadian LX (which uses the same infotainment system as the American EX).

I suspect you, like several others, have Apple Music enabled and have a large music library. This combination almost always does the 2-minute "No Device Connected" behavior we are all seeing.

Disabling Apple Music almost always makes things work much better but obviously that is not an acceptable workaround - but it does prove what the culprit is (or at least one of the culprits)

And it is definitely a combination of both as I plug my wife's phone in who has Apple Music enabled but has a much smaller music library than me and her phone works great in my car

It is very frustrating to say the least.

Correct, I do have both Apple Music and iTunes Match, and my library is over 14,000 songs.

I don't want to turn it off though, as I use it and don't want to lose all that music. Does that mean I'm screwed?

Also, if Apple Music is causing the problem, does that mean it's an iOS issue rather than a Honda issue? Who has to update their software for this to work properly?

You, like others, are screwed for now.

It is unclear exactly where the fix is going to come from. It seems from scanning other threads that the fix ultimately needs to come from Honda. One member mentioned in a thread (and I can't find it now) that he emailed Tim Cook and had someone from Apple contact him and confirmed it was indeed an Apple Music compatibility issue and that they (Apple) were working with Honda to address it. But, with that said, plenty of other non-Honda owners are having CarPlay issues similar to this which would point to it being an Apple issue. If it is an Apple issue, they are taking their time to getting around to fix it. I am using the latest 10.3 Public Beta and it still does not work.

So, for now, there is no answer or solution. Sucks for sure

I assume there has been no further update on this.

Reason I ask is I took my car in to Honda today for an A1 service. Last time I took my car in I mentioned the CarPlay issues to them and (of course) they had not heard of them. Their technician could not reproduce the problem but that was before I knew about the Apple Music issues. And today, they (Honda) also mentioned not knowing about any CarPlay issues - going as far as to say, "you should use Bluetooth Streaming anyway".

So as I sat waiting for my oil change, I became frustrated (not that I wasn't already) about the lack of progress on the whole CarPlay compatibility issue with some of us. The silence is deafening as far as any updates / progress is concerned - especially from Honda. While I was sitting there I logged into OwnersLink and created a case for this issue. I admittedly have not done anything on this and feel like nothing will happen if "one" doesn't do anything.

Does anyone have any additional suggestions on what to do to light a fire under whoever to get something going on this?

CarPlay!!!!!!!!!!!

Here's an interesting tidbit. In our last few pre-CarPlay USB enabled Hondas we would see a popup error message appear Every. Single. Time on the Honda infotainment screen within a couple of minutes after plugging in one of our phones. I wish I had the exact language of the error, but it was I believe something like:

"Device exceeds the maximum allowed number of song files 20,000.", then some other stuff I can't recall now and an "OK" button. To bypass the popup we'd just press the center OK knob. It became a habit, and we'd have full access to our music - albeit with the poorly designed Honda Infotainment GUI.

I've got to think that somewhere in the guts of the Honda operating system there's some bug that chokes on large iCloud libraries that register >20K or so songs, and the bug has been there since at least our 2012 Odyssey with the large center knob. What we may be seeing is a mutation of that bug in our CarPlay connections causing the "No Device Connected" screen error, but nevertheless the music continues.

I agree with what everyone else is saying - Apple and Honda need to put their heads together to fix the bug and stop the finger pointing in the other direction. Glad to see Tim Cook and team have addressed the issue directly with SpaceBoy88. It's encouraging but a quick search of Google confirms this issue may not be a Honda<>Apple only bug. Several threads out there for aftermarket Pioneer and other brand CarPlay head units disconnecting after 2 mins due to the 20K song issue as well. So perhaps there's a lot of work Apple needs to do with a variety of manufacturers, who knows.

Way I see it - the CarPlay advertisements online and in brochures, not to mention showroom sales pitches need to all contain an asterisks - "*Only compatible with music libraries smaller than 20,000 songs" or whatever to maintain honesty. I love my music collection, it's why I'm fine with paying $9.99/month to access it anywhere. CarPlay was probably one of the most anticipated features I couldn't wait to use when I bought the car, now I've got to disengage it to hear and scroll through my playlists and music collection - phone in hand and eyes looking down and distracted - to hear my music via bluetooth instead? The whole point of CarPlay was to let me interact with text messages and calls via Siri, play songs/artists/playlists with Siri voice commands, etc. My Civic has Navi but my CR-V doesn't so using Maps on a large center screen is now out if my screen goes dark.

(I know I can unplug and replug it to regain control via CarPlay but this seems archaic and worthy of bitching) ;)

So disappointing.

This totally explains why I never had this kind of problem with my setup. I was reading about CarPlay problems and wondering what you guys were doing.

I never turned on iCloud syncing for my iTunes library because I don't want to constantly stream data (plus, most of my music library is personal recordings and ripped CDs anyway). So, plugging in my iPhone is like plugging in a regular iPod.

Anyway, I'll watch this thread for whenever Apple and/or Honda talk about an update. I figure you guys will know what to do next.

I forgot to circle back on this...

Shortly after submitting a case on this I got a call from a Honda representative.

Too make a long story short...

  1. The Honda support rep did not know about the issue with large music libraries
  2. He checked their case log and claims there is no mention of other cases where large music libraries were an issue
  3. He didn't really have any other suggestions on what to do above and beyond what I (and others here) have already done.
So, in the end, it was somewhat of a waste of time and I was no better off (or worse off) after talking to them.

And if anything comes out of Spaceboy88's correspondence with Apple, it is going on 3-4 months now. Bummer!

Same thing happened to me when I opened the case. The guy assigned to the Case was clueless and his suggestions (reset to factory settings) I had already done them before.

Granted I have been using Apple Music as it has all my collection but my OCD does not let me be as I know I am not using the full capabilities of the system.
