Low sales volume ultimately killed the S2000, look at the sales numbers they progressively declined to the point where it couldn't sustain the platform. You can't attract a large customer base with only a manual transmission in North America, plain and simple, and North America was the largest market. You exclude a large portion of the female customer base without an auto tranny offering. The Miata continues to survive the S2000 got axed. Honda can't stomach low volume vehicles unlike other manufacturers, and they don't care about keeping a model "rare" they work off profit plain and simple. That's the reason they've been catering to retirees and soccer moms the last 15 years.
Please don't take this the wrong way. :) I don't mean it as an insult nor am I insinuating anything. This actually made me laugh so much because the statement sounded precisely like it was coming from a bitter female who couldn't purchase an S2K because it was manual only.

edit: It was funny because you obviously own(ed) an S2K.

Theres a reason F1 banned CVT transmissions. A few years ago, I despised CVT. I wouldn't mind one now that the tech has advanced a bit.

We will see what happens with it...
F1 never had CVT's

That is just not so. They have 7 speed constant mesh transaxles. There has never been a CVT made yet that could handle the HP made by an F1 engine.

100% did. Never saw the track, maybe that's the distinction you're making?

Edit: The only reason it didn't see the track is because it was banned by the FIA because of the massive advantage it offered. Not because of any reliability issues.

That was 24 years ago. And since it never raced, you cannot know its reliability issues. Sure, they try lots of things, but CVT's were just one of many ideas that never made the cut. And yes, that is the distinction I am making. I have been following F1 since the days of Lauda and Hunt. No CVT's... thank gawd....

If it weren't banned it would have gone into that race season. So they had a cvt 24 years ago that could handle the power of an F1 car, which was exactly the opposite of your point. Keep stroking your ego though, there's no way you could be wrong.

If the CVT transmission could handle being tested on an F1 24 years ago with the technological advances we've made, it's certainly is NOT a week transmission compared to the manual therefore it is ONLY customer preference that's holding them back, not reliability or strength!!!
Honda and other manufacturers should offer them (cvt's) on all models and let the individual decide which they want, and when the CVT's begin thrashing the manual trans equipped vehicles (performance wise) they will assuredly become very much main stream.

True that CVT technology has advanced. However, not all of us are arguing or trashing the CVT for the inferiority of it. We all know that CVT and DCT can be faster than manuals, but that is not what we are focusing on as enthusiasts. Cars are different. Some are for fastest times. Some are for handling. With certain level of handling performance in a car, we LIKE having the control and skills that come with driving one.
