Hello, i have an appointment later on today for a oil change with Honda and my buddy also has a civic coupe but when he went in for an oil change they told him he has to come in with 15% percent not 20% making him waste his time driving to his dealer which is about an hour away. So i was wondering if i should just cancel my appointment and just way till i get to 15% or just go to my dealer which is also about and hour away and maybe take the chance? Has anyone had there oil change done at 20% ? Thanks for the help !

Ya that's complete hogwash. I changed mine at 40% the first time with no questions asked at my dealer.

There was talk in an oil thread that Honda still puts in a special blend, not commercially available, in their new cars, designed for engine break-in. If that's true, I would want to wait to a low % to have my first change. In any case you can certainly wait until 10% or even 0% -- there is leeway built into the 0%.

Dealer is full of it on this one
Just had my first service done and my oil was like 30% at 7000 miles but MM code 1 came up for tire rotation etc.
So I brought it in because the tires definitely needed to be rotated, and my dealer said nothing to me about the oil life, they just did the first service.
I also have the whole service package if that makes a difference or not I do not know.

When I worked at the dealership, we had people bringing their cars in for oil changes sometimes with ridiculously low mileage - 800 miles, 1500 miles - essentially brand new cars. They were there because the salesman had set up an initial service, or because it had been 6 months, or whatever their personal reason. We'd always first suggest that they put on some more mileage than that and show them the Maintenance Minder and what it means, and some would appreciate that. Others would get upset that we were "trying to dissuade them" or that they made the trip for nothing, and they'd insist we change the oil - and naturally we did it for them without issue. So yes, you can have your oil changed whenever you want - 15%, 20%, even 100%! Haha.

But yeah, absolutely no one should be giving you a hard time about 20%. Heck, it could flip to 15% on your drive back home. That's a good way to create an angry customer!

They tried to do this to me. I had my first oil change at 20% because I needed a tire rotation and I had a day off and was going to be in that area. The tech guy said "we really aren't supposed to change the oil until the notification comes on" I asked when was that he said in probably another 1000 miles. I said I'm here now let's go ahead and change it anyway and they did.

Laziest service advisor ever.

Doesn't he want the opportunity to push an engine flush, coolant flush, the "Ultimate Battery Protection Package", and a fuel treatment package?

Do you have "Free for Life", or Free for x Years oil changes? If so there is likely a minimum (15%?) before they'll do the service or they lose bucks. Otherwise it's your decision and $$$.

And the chance to change the air in your tires for fresh air!

i brought mine in at 40% and added some Mrs. Butterworths Maple Syrup. Hey if it tastes good, how bad could it be for the car?

OK, OK that was a joke. HOWEVER one time by friend was having an ongoing fight with someone in his apartment complex and he had his car "keyed" from front to back on both sides. Rumors have it that he poured an extra large container of Mrs. Butterworths into the offending neighbors gas tank.
Don't know how true but.......
