I was up in the mountains in October, and took my recycling in the car to drop off on the way home. One of those large, fat woodsy spiders caught a ride, and later that week the bugger crawled over the headrest, and got caught in my hair (lots of hair in a bun). I flipped. It was like being carjacked at gunpoint and the gunman tells you to just drive. I was ready to crash the car just to get that spider.
To the OP's question about something to repel them: Get some cedar oil, dab it on a cotton swab, and then apply it on fabric out of sight (it may stain) in spread out areas. If you don't mind the smell, dab it on a cotton ball or two, and leave on under your seat and in the trunk. Spiders and most other bugs cat cedar oil. Non toxic, and it lasts a fair amount of time.
